Please follow United Critics for quality reviews
Darker: Chapter 1 Review

Delusion At Its Peak
Darker: Chapter 1 is one of those visual novels that doesn’t tiptoe around its themes at all. It jumps straight into a dark, heavy narrative and makes it very clear what kind of ride you’re signing up for. You’re following Grace, and from the start, it feels less like a light story and more like watching someone slowly get pulled into something they might not fully escape. It’s bold, uncomfortable at times and definitely not meant for everyone. Going by Steam’s tracker, I clocked in about 6-7 hours to wrap this one up. Obviously, that’s not pure playtime and your own pace will vary, but it gives you a solid idea of the commitment. You could definitely blast through it faster or take your time soaking in the narrative depending on how you play.
About This Game

Storyline
The story kicks off with what seems like a normal vacation setup, but that “normal” feeling doesn’t last long. Things start slipping pretty quickly, and before you know it, Grace is caught in a web of manipulation, power struggles, and increasingly questionable situations. What stands out is how the game leans into psychological tension. It’s not just about what happens but also how Grace reacts and changes over time. The idea of control versus submission is constantly in play, and the game keeps asking whether she’s making choices or just convincing herself she is. It’s very much a branching narrative, so your decisions shape how far things go and in what direction. Some paths feel like slow burns, others escalate fast and that unpredictability actually keeps things engaging.
Gameplay Mechanics
At its core, this is a choice-driven visual novel, so don’t expect complex mechanics. Your main job is reading, deciding and dealing with the consequences. Where it works well is in how those choices are presented. They don’t always feel obvious. Sometimes you’re picking between options that both seem risky, just in different ways. That adds a bit of tension because you’re never entirely sure what you’re steering Grace into. Branching paths give it replay value too. You can clearly see that different decisions open up entirely different scenes and outcomes, which makes experimenting feel worthwhile.
Visuals & Audio
The game looks seriously polished. With more than 5k renders in 2k resolution, everything feels sharp and detailed. Character expressions, environments, lighting - it all comes together nicely. And honestly, one thing that really stood out is that it doesn’t seem like they used AI for the visuals. That’s genuinely impressive considering the volume and quality of content. There’s a consistent artistic feel throughout, which helps immersion a lot. Sound design also does its job well. Ambient tracks and effects help set the mood, especially in more intense or uneasy scenes. It’s not overdone, but it’s enough to pull you in.
Pros

Strong, bold storytelling that doesn’t play it safe
Meaningful choices with noticeable consequences
High-quality visuals with consistent art direction
No reliance on AI visuals, which is refreshing
Good replay value thanks to branching paths

Cons

Themes can be very heavy and not for everyone
Limited gameplay beyond reading and choosing
Some scenes may feel uncomfortable depending on player preference
Animation quantity is limited, even if the quality is solid

Conclusion
This is the kind of visual novel that knows exactly what it wants to be and fully commits to it. It’s intense, story-focused, and leans heavily into darker emotional territory. If you’re here for a deep narrative with meaningful choices and aren’t put off by heavy themes, there’s a lot to dig into. It’s not a casual playthrough kind of game, though. This is something you sit with, think about, and maybe even question a bit as you go. And with this being just the first chapter, it definitely feels like things are only going to get more intense from here. Rating: 8/10 Some play such games for sex while others stay for the plot… For full review head over to our website

This woman is infuriating and so is her simp of a man. unplayable for me
If you are in the mood to allow a married woman go off on a vacation with another man while that man conduct his own business, and give the woman sexual tasks to complete, then this is for you. But I don't think that I will pursue any more of this.
Pros: Nice storyline Nice Models, graphics and soundtracks Good price corruption path Cons: Lack of puzzles(non), choices(not too many) 8/10(I will give a chance to the second part)
Sorry, not into violent murder
There are very few adult scenes, and there are no camera or selection options during scenes. I'll wait for the Polish version of the game to rate it. There are choices, but I have the impression they don't impact the plot. The graphics are okay. We have to wait for updates, maybe something will be improved. In my opinion, it's a negative for now. I've played much more interesting games, even in English, and I couldn't understand them, but the scenes and graphics are more interesting.
