Having played all the cities builders of note, enjoying the hardest difficulty... I can honestly say, this game is bad. Between a frustatingly unintuitive system of management and click errors that don't explain why 9 lumber can't be moved out of a storage ccontainer thats preventing progression..... theres not a lot this game has going for it. 0-10. Just play a round of frostpunk 2 and save your cash.
It's not a terrible game, just too bland and repetitive. There are no major bugs, the graphics are alright and the voice acting is nice, but... There's just not a whole lot of content. You basically build what feels like the same buildings over and over again. Every camp needs the same basic food ressource. You then unlock new ships and buffs via a skill tree. The points for this tree you get by completing deeds like 'have 250 pirates on the island' or 'complete 10 events with this captain on your ship'. For the new ships, you *can* get different classes of pirates that want new ressources - but in the end, it's just a mild variation from building up the basic food chain over and over again. There are some mildly advanced ressource chains, but building them feels more like chore than progressing. There's no trade or any benefit to building them other than being able to use another type of crew, which give a tiny boost to your ship's stats. The only other buildings, which you can also unlock via the skill tree, all give incredibly minor and weak buffs. They are just not worth building, since the ressource costs are way too high and you can very well get by without them. The combat is nothing challenging. You have a few skill cards you play against whatever you encounter. Unfortunately, the mechanics are always the same. 'Deal X damage of a type', 'prevent X damage of a type' and 'add X bonus to your next role' are pretty much the only things on there. A 6-year old child can play this. You only need to bring the right boat - the game conveniently recommends the exact best type before sailing to an event. The story... exists, I guess? It's nothing to get invested in. The atmosphere is great, I just don't really care about the characters at all. They are rather simple pirate stereotypes.
BUYERS BEWARE: the publisher has disabled the Family Sharing function for this game, yet the Store Page still lists it as supported. I am the Family organizer, and none of the family members can see this game in their libraries. This is unacceptable; I will not change this negative review until the publisher re-enables Family Sharing.
Corsair Cove is a slick, shockingly intuitive city builder that takes a lot of the lessons Limbic learned from working on the Tropico series and applies them to piratical hijinks. I'm normally pretty terrible at managing logistics and production chains in these sorts of games, but the tools and UX are good enough that even my nightmarish spiderweb of zip lines, warehouses, and elevators was enough to keep my pirate cove from collapsing. (and to be clear, the name of the game *is* ensuring that you can get your resources where they need to go) The high seas lite RPG stuff does sometimes feel like a series of raw stat checks more than anything else, but it's also unobstructive and fast, with writing that is light and fun in a way one would want from a game about managing a pirate empire. I had a very good time with this one.
Looks good. Runs well. Thematically and mechanically satisfying. All around win. Highly recommended. Hooded horse continues to bring solid games to market in an era where ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ executives are killing the industry. Give them your money.
Honestly I like most of the game, but not having an auto sell option on the trade posts is the most tedious bs I've ever had the misfortune of experiencing. It's so damn tedious to shift through the trade posts, yet I also feel forced to do it because it's far more optimal. I made an entire new save trying to place my trade posts better so it'd be less tedious, which didn't really change anything except make me have a bit of fun again untill I built up multiple trade posts to get rid of excess resources yet again. I'm literally hesitating to play the game because despite everything I like, I constantly find myself back at cycling multiple trade posts to click a damn button instead of doing anything fun. I just uninstalled it entirely because of this one thing that constantly makes me spiral into tedious unfun clicking the same couple buttons over and over with a short cooldown.
A refreshing new blend of Sid Meier's and Anno
