Commander: World War II is a turn-based military strategy game developed and published by GoldenGod Games in cooperation with FondGame. The title attempts to recreate the strategic atmosphere of World War II by placing players in the role of a battlefield commander responsible for directing military forces across various combat scenarios. Rather than focusing on fast-paced real-time combat, the game emphasizes careful planning and tactical decision-making, allowing players to analyze the battlefield, position their units strategically, and gradually outmaneuver opposing forces. Its design clearly draws inspiration from classic grid-based wargames, presenting warfare as a methodical contest of positioning, resource management, and battlefield awareness. The game takes place during the global conflict of the Second World War and allows players to command several major factions that were historically involved in the war. These factions include the United States, Germany, and the Soviet Union, each representing different military doctrines and battlefield capabilities. Players must deploy a variety of unit types to accomplish objectives and defeat enemy forces across a series of strategic maps. These units range from infantry divisions and armored tanks to air units and naval forces, creating a diverse military roster that reflects the different branches of wartime combat. Gameplay is structured around a grid-based battlefield where each unit moves and acts during its designated turn. Every unit possesses specific attributes such as mobility, attack strength, and defensive capability. Terrain plays a crucial role in determining how effective each unit will be in combat. For example, tanks perform best on open terrain where they can maneuver freely, while infantry units may gain defensive advantages when positioned in forests, hills, or urban environments. Rivers and other natural obstacles can restrict movement and create chokepoints, forcing players to think carefully about how they approach each engagement. Strategic coordination between different unit types becomes essential as battles grow more complex. Infantry units are effective for capturing and holding territory, tanks provide strong offensive pressure, and aircraft can deliver powerful strikes from above. Naval units add another layer of strategy when maps include coastal areas or waterways. Success often depends on understanding how these units complement each other and deploying them in ways that maximize their strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. Poor positioning or careless attacks can quickly lead to heavy losses, especially when facing multiple enemy units at once. The campaign missions serve as the main framework of the game, presenting players with a variety of battle scenarios inspired by World War II conflicts. Each mission introduces new objectives and battlefield layouts that require different tactical approaches. Some scenarios focus on capturing strategic locations, while others require players to eliminate enemy forces or defend important positions against attacks. The variety of mission objectives encourages players to adapt their strategies rather than relying on a single approach throughout the game. In addition to the campaign, Commander: World War II offers several additional modes that expand its replay value. Skirmish battles allow players to fight standalone matches on various maps without progressing through the main story. These battles can often be customized, enabling players to experiment with different strategies, factions, and army compositions. This flexibility allows the game to remain engaging even after the primary campaign has been completed. One of the more interesting features included in the game is a map editor that allows players to create their own battlefields. With this tool, users can design custom scenarios by placing terrain features, objectives, and starting positions for both sides of the conflict. This feature encourages creativity and gives players the opportunity to craft their own strategic challenges. Community-created maps can significantly extend the lifespan of the game, as players share and experiment with new battlefield layouts. Visually, the game adopts a functional top-down presentation that prioritizes clarity over graphical complexity. Units are represented by detailed models that clearly distinguish different types of military equipment, making it easy to identify infantry squads, armored vehicles, aircraft, and other forces during battle. The environments themselves include a variety of terrain types such as forests, cities, mountains, and open plains. While the graphics are not particularly advanced compared to larger strategy games, the visual design serves its purpose by keeping the battlefield easy to read and understand. The sound design reinforces the military theme with background music that evokes wartime tension and strategic planning. Sound effects accompany combat actions such as artillery strikes, gunfire, and explosions, helping to make each engagement feel more impactful. Although the audio presentation is relatively simple, it provides enough atmosphere to complement the tactical gameplay without becoming distracting. However, the game does have several limitations that may affect how players perceive the overall experience. The interface and presentation can feel somewhat basic compared to more established strategy titles, and some elements of the user interface may take time to get used to. Additionally, the artificial intelligence controlling enemy forces occasionally behaves predictably, which may reduce the challenge for experienced players who quickly learn its patterns. Players looking for deep historical simulation or extremely complex strategic systems may find the gameplay somewhat straightforward. Despite these shortcomings, Commander: World War II still offers a solid tactical experience for players who enjoy turn-based strategy games. Its emphasis on positioning, terrain advantages, and combined arms tactics provides a satisfying level of strategic depth. The inclusion of customizable battles and map creation tools also adds long-term replayability for players who enjoy experimenting with different scenarios. Ultimately, Commander: World War II succeeds as a straightforward and accessible strategy game that captures the essential elements of grid-based wartime tactics. While it may not reach the scale or complexity of major strategy franchises, it provides an enjoyable experience for players who appreciate thoughtful, turn-based military gameplay and the challenge of commanding armies during one of history’s most significant conflicts. Rating: 7/10
Order of Battle is far superior.
Great strategy game with good visuals
another very good turn based war game
