Was having fun and I like how you can keep retrying when you make it to a boss. The game autosaves but unfortunately after making it through 4 or 5 chapters I accidentally clicked on new game and it automatically deleted my save file. Uninstalling out of frustration. There should be save slots or at lease have a confirmation before starting a new game so you can back out.
Much better than the 3 games before this in the series. Alternate routes and bosses, plus much improved controls and design. Still not as good as it's inspiration, but still a decend action game
这是个超低配版的恶魔城血之轮回,而且还是SFC上的那款血之轮回…………
Citadale – The Ancestral Strain, developed by ERMedia and published by Plug In Digital, is a retro-inspired action platformer that deliberately embraces the design philosophy of classic 16-bit era games. Instead of following modern trends such as open exploration, RPG progression trees, or cinematic storytelling, the game focuses on straightforward stage-based action and demanding gameplay that rewards patience and precision. Its visual presentation, combat style, and overall pacing feel like a tribute to the difficult gothic platformers that defined the early console era, creating an experience that is both nostalgic and intentionally unforgiving. The story centers around the Dorleac bloodline, a family long tasked with protecting the world from ancient forces of darkness. Players take control of Arion Dorleac, a descendant of this legendary lineage who must confront a familiar threat from the past. The powerful and malevolent Rhogul, an entity known as the Lord of Darkness, has returned after a long period of silence and now seeks vengeance against the family responsible for his previous defeat. As the latest warrior of the Dorleac line, Arion embarks on a dangerous journey through cursed lands, ancient ruins, and enemy-infested strongholds to stop Rhogul before his influence spreads across the world once again. Unlike many modern platformers that emphasize interconnected worlds or gradual ability unlocks, Citadale – The Ancestral Strain follows a traditional stage-based format. Each level acts as a self-contained challenge that must be completed before progressing to the next area. These stages are often lengthy and filled with enemies, traps, and environmental hazards that demand careful navigation. The structure encourages players to learn each level’s layout and enemy placement through repeated attempts, reinforcing the old-school philosophy that mastery comes through perseverance. Combat is one of the central elements of the game. Arion’s primary weapon is the Shadow Blade, a powerful sword that can be used to cut through waves of enemies encountered throughout the adventure. In addition to standard melee attacks, players can acquire and use various sub-weapons and magical abilities that provide alternative ways to deal with threats. These tools can be particularly useful in situations where enemies attack from multiple directions or appear in difficult-to-reach positions. Despite the availability of these additional abilities, the core of the combat system remains rooted in timing, positioning, and learning enemy behavior. Enemy encounters become progressively more challenging as players advance through the game. Different enemy types appear with unique movement patterns and attack styles, forcing players to adjust their tactics depending on the situation. Some enemies approach aggressively in close combat, while others attack from a distance or occupy dangerous positions within the environment. Boss battles further increase the intensity by introducing powerful opponents that require careful observation and strategy to defeat. Platforming also plays a significant role in the gameplay experience. Many levels contain narrow platforms, hazardous traps, and environmental dangers that must be navigated with precision. Mistimed jumps or poorly planned movements can quickly result in damage or death, sending players back to earlier sections of the stage. This combination of platforming and combat creates a gameplay rhythm where players must constantly balance offense and caution while progressing through each area. One of the game’s more interesting features is the presence of branching level paths hidden within certain stages. Some levels contain secret exits that lead to alternative routes through the game’s world. These hidden pathways can eventually result in different endings depending on the player’s choices and exploration habits. This design adds a layer of replayability, encouraging players to revisit the game in order to discover every possible route and outcome. Visually, Citadale – The Ancestral Strain adopts a pixel-art style that closely resembles the aesthetic of classic 16-bit platformers. Characters and enemies are rendered with detailed sprite work that evokes the look of older console titles. The environments feature dark castles, ominous caves, and eerie landscapes that reinforce the game’s gothic atmosphere. While the graphics intentionally avoid modern realism, they effectively capture the nostalgic charm associated with retro action games. The sound design complements the dark fantasy theme with dramatic music and retro-style sound effects. The soundtrack provides a tense and sometimes ominous background to the action, helping emphasize the dangerous journey that Arion undertakes. Weapon strikes, enemy defeats, and environmental interactions are accompanied by simple but satisfying audio cues that reinforce the feeling of combat and movement. Despite its strengths, the game’s dedication to old-school difficulty may not appeal to every player. The levels can be quite long, and mistakes often require replaying significant portions of a stage. This unforgiving structure can feel frustrating for players who are accustomed to more forgiving checkpoint systems found in modern platformers. Additionally, while the combat mechanics are solid, they do not evolve significantly over time, which may cause the gameplay to feel repetitive during extended sessions. However, for players who appreciate classic action platformers, these design choices are part of the game’s appeal. The challenge encourages players to carefully study enemy patterns and improve their skills through repeated attempts. Successfully completing a difficult level often feels rewarding precisely because of the effort required to reach the end. Ultimately, Citadale – The Ancestral Strain stands as a passionate homage to the demanding platformers of earlier gaming generations. Its combination of gothic atmosphere, challenging combat, and branching level paths creates an experience that feels both nostalgic and rewarding for those willing to embrace its difficulty. While it may not appeal to players seeking modern conveniences or expansive mechanics, it offers a focused and satisfying adventure for fans of retro-style action platforming. Rating: 6/10
