I like chickens and i like this
Chicken is about as simple as a game can get. I click a chicken, get more chickens and slowly build up a collection of different chickens. That is basically the entire idea, but there is something quite funny about how seriously the game commits to it. Every three hours I can get a random chicken, so the main reason for coming back is seeing what I can collect next. It is completely free to play, which makes the simple concept easier to enjoy without feeling like I am expected to take it seriously. The collecting is the part I find most enjoyable. I am not really playing for complicated progression or difficult challenges. I am mostly clicking, checking what I have collected and waiting for another random chicken to appear. There are also items connected to the collection, which gives me a little more to look at than just having one chicken on the screen. I like games that understand when a silly idea does not need to be turned into something complicated. I also like the community aspect behind the chickens. The game says that the chicken designs are made with community effort and inspiration, with people able to submit ideas through the game's Discord. That gives the collection a more unpredictable feeling because the chickens can be based on all sorts of strange ideas rather than following one serious theme. It fits the whole tone of the game very well. The biggest weakness is obviously the lack of actual gameplay. Once I understand that I am clicking for chickens and waiting for the next random drop, there is not much else for me to learn. There are no complicated strategies or meaningful decisions that suddenly appear later. The three hour wait is also a pretty important part of the progression, so I cannot really sit down and play for hours expecting a huge amount of new content. I have to be happy with checking in occasionally. The presentation is basic, but I do not think that is necessarily a problem here. The game is clearly going for something silly and lightweight, and having a complicated presentation would probably work against the idea. Even the descriptions and little jokes around the game add to the feeling that I am looking at a deliberately ridiculous chicken collecting project rather than a serious idle game. The free to play setup is probably what makes the most sense for me. I can access the actual game without paying, while there are additional items available separately. Since the core idea is so small, I would not want to pay a lot just to click a chicken and wait for another one. Having it available for free makes it much easier for me to treat it as a little background game that I check every so often rather than something I need to spend a lot of time with. Overall, Chicken is a funny little clicker that knows exactly how simple it is. I like the ridiculous collection idea, the random chickens, the community involvement and the fact that I can just leave it alone and come back later. At the same time, there is almost no depth beyond collecting chickens, so I cannot rate it alongside games that give me much more to actually do. For me, it works best as a tiny distraction rather than a full game, and the free price makes that perfectly reasonable. Rating: 6.6/10
