After watching a video on Youtube about hexagonal chess, I was curious to try it out, and pleased to find a free version on Steam. However, I was disappointed by the implementation. Pros: - Free - Nice-looking graphics. - Fairly intuitive UI. - The ability to undo moves is helpful, though I wish I'd discovered it sooner. - When you hover over a piece, it shows all the spaces it can move to, and when you click on one of your pieces and then hover over an opponent's piece, it shows the moves for *both* of them (in different colors). This allows you to check whether you're moving into a threatened space. Cons: - No warning when your king is in check (nor does the game prevent you from making a move that exposes your king to check). This is super annoying! Every game I've played has ended in a loss because one of the opponent's pieces that I forgot to check on swooped in and captured my king (and I can't even undo it, because you're dumped back to the menu screen when you lose). - All the spaces are the same color, instead of three different colors like they're supposed to be. This makes it hard to keep track of where the bishops can move to. - No instructions or tutorial (although you can find the rules online easily enough). - No sound. - No way to change the resolution. - No way to adjust difficulty. - No way to save your game. - No two-player mode; it's only you vs. the AI. (Not that I care about this, but some might.) - It's been out for eight months, but the "Ranked" button still says "Coming Soon". - There are keyboard hotkeys as well as mouse controls, but they're not documented anywhere. One more observation, which I can't really call a flaw, but I couldn't help wondering why there was so much wasted space in the game environment. If you watch the trailer, you can see that the game is set in a large cavern filled with wooden walkways and mine tracks, of which the gameboard occupies one small area. What was the point of designing so many visual assets that apparently serve no purpose but decoration? Maybe when you win a game you advance to a new platform? I have no way of knowing, since I've yet to win a game, but it seems unlikely given that there's no way to save your progress. You might give this game a try if you want to see what hex chess is like, but I can't imagine wanting to continue playing it long-term unless you're a) someone who already knows how to play hex chess and is good at it, or b) a masochist.
