What can I say? It's a shame I only recently discovered it, a great game from Cryptic, the creators of Neverwinter and Star Trek Online. Below is a list of the game's aspects: - Technically, it's a dated game, and it shows, but in my opinion, it's well-crafted and functional, with decent animations and well-executed Marvel comic-style graphics. - Character creation is absolutely HUGE; I don't think even current MMOs come close to the depth of this customization. Furthermore, each class isn't really that rigid; you can mix and match many skills and orient your character in multiple directions. - Excellent combat; it's a well-designed action/tab targeting system; you'll have to parry, charge up attacks, and be careful about energy consumption when using skills. - The population isn't very high, but it's present. There are still enough players to allow for queues, dungeons, and events at the same time. Also, there is a discord channel still very active The main hub, Millennium City, is very large and has many quests and frequent updates, a common feature in Cryptic games (see Neverwinter). In conclusion, it's not a dead game; in fact, it's still quite popular, especially among veteran players. I don't think there are many new players. I see some low-level ones around, but I think they're older players starting new characters, but it's the same thing. Regardless, don't care about the graphics or the fact that it's not very popular; it's a game that offers a lot of content and variety. Seeing is believing.
The current company has decided to undo everything good that was added to this game last year, and make everything else more grindy and overall worse. Also, unprofessional actions and bigotry from the company and developer. - Preface: I played on Arc, and I have 900 hours of gameplay there. You can tell I played on a non steam platform, since I have "The Gift of Winter" achievement without having any other achievements. (Tip: You can see how long you've played on a character using /played!) TL;DR: Every positive thing added under the previous company and developers during 2025-2026 has either been removed[CAMS][Colo][Invis], or been directly stated by the developer that it will be removed[Powers]. Constant free2play rewards nerfs this year [CAMS][Event][Event]. This game DOES NOT BOOT on any modern AMD PCs because ONE DEFAULT CONFIG HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED FOR YEARS.[DX9] This game's patch notes are very often seemingly intentionally misleading [Patch](ctrl-f "Not mentioned in the patch notes"). The official discord, rather than banning outward bigotry, prefers to shadow ban people who criticize patch notes. AFAIK, the one moderator who does ban bigotry was the only mod not appointed by Kaiserin. General acts of bigotry and unprofessional behaviour[b1][b2][u1]. There is much, MUCH more I could talk about, but this review is long enough. Just... look at the size of that TL;DR. [DX9] Granted, there is a bug when the default DirectX setting is set to DirectX11 where some textures become fully black. However, the fix for this bug has been known for 4 years and nothing has been done. [Invis] + In 2025, there was a bug where using a psionic piece coloured black made that costume piece invisible. The previous developer team intentionally kept it, after the players enjoyed it. . In March 2026, this was removed. Invisible pieces were added to paperback. - Unbelievably, the stated reason for this change was [paraphrasing] "for future content that may be released where invisibility might be an issue". No future content has been released yet. There's no real reason for this change. - If you did not previously get every piece from the 20 dollar per, limited time, RNG keypack, you now have to pay about 20 extra dollars for invisible costumes (also RNG) through paperback. - This is also a nerf. You can no longer use auras to reveal invisible costume pieces, since the new invisible costume piece is always the same blank player model. [CAMS] - CAMS got added in late 2025. Overall, very disliked for being overly pay2win. + A month later, the previous devs did add 100 free cams on every event, on every character. No grind required, just talk to the quest giver NPC and you got them. 100 is great, since it was just enough to get the first good tier of cams (2). - In April 2026, this reward got permanently removed [Not mentioned in the patch notes]. In exchange, you can choose to get less event rewards per quest for a much smaller 5 cams reward. - Needless to say, doing 20 daily event quests per character per event, in a game where veterans often have upwards of 100 characters is impossible, and even if you did, you would lose a large amount of event rewards from not picking the other currency, which used to be guarenteed. [Event] Event rewards for extra tokens got nerfed twice [Not mentioned in the patch notes, either time]. - First the event token reward got nerfed from 25 to 15. - Then the event token reward got nerfed from 15 to 10. - There was no compensation buff. [Powers] - The Kaiserin has stated on discord that she'll nerf all 4 of the powers that the previous developer team created. She has already entirely removed one of them (hellrend), for no stated reason. [Not mentioned in the patch notes] [COLO] + In April 2025, the device "Colossus' Essence" was added. This item added a growing effect, however, it's main effect was that that growth effect specifically stacked with other growth effects. This was kept after the previous development team fixed a bug. One of the previous developers specifically stated on the official discord this change was intentional. - In April 2026, this effect was removed [Not mentioned in the patch notes]. - In July 2026, the image for this item, despite being totally fine before, got inexplicably replaced with an image of the Predator ArcheType. For context, AFAIK, this AT is one of Kaiserin's OCs. . Note: There is an option in the settings to not see size changing effects (disruptive FX). [10] + ~June 2025: "Superspeed Serum" gets added. It's a speed boosting device that stacks with travel powers. I cannot overstate how much everyone loved this item. - May 2026: Kaiserin states on the discord that superspeed serum is getting nerfed due to a bug. - - The players on the server say they've tested the item and there was no bug. - - The developer waits until the day of the patch notes to reply to this, saying that "it's on some map" - - People ask "which map" - - No response. - Superspeed serum gets a nerf so severe that it basically doesn't increase your movement speed at all. - - People complain about the nerf. - - The developer makes a slight revert. The item is still basically useless. [b1] - This one's petty, but I just wanted to add. This year's Nightmare event started on the first day of Pride month. And the developer made sure to give everyone a new perk called "The nightmare begins" on that date. Mighty suspicious change... - Still no pride event, by the way... despite 10 years of the community asking Kaiserin for it. [b2] - Kaiserin teased a shield costume piece for Patriot event. After many people complained about the costume heavily resembling a hate symbol, including sending e-mails to the company's PR page, the messages the dev sent mysteriously disappeared! [u1] . 3 or 4 prominent players deleted their CO guides/tools, most relevant being the deletion of a widely used external power building/saving tool. . A news article gets released about this, where they stated they got in contact with the game's developers. - The day before the article comes out, about 10 members of the CO discord get banned for no reason. No stated ban reason. No ban message. Some of them had not spoken on the server for WEEKS. (Most haven't been unbanned btw) - The day the article gets released, THE WEBSITE'S NAME GETS BLACKLISTED OFF OF THE CO DISCORD SERVER.
Awesome, just like the good old days!
