The amount of pay walling this game contains despite it's age and quality is nuts.
The fact is theres no other game quite like Champions Online for being able to personalise your superhero and play in a shared MMo world. Originally planned as a marvel sequel to City of Heroes the developers were left in the lurch when Marvel got cold feet and thus went to the pen and paper Champions universe for a license. And sure, the graphics are dated but the ray tracing effect makes it look like you are playing a comic.

The character customization in this game is super cool and the powers are neat but that's about it, I put almost 70 hours into this game and feel like I've seen enough to know it's not for me.
The very definition of old but good~ the game is aging and some parts of it can be feel, but still very enjoyable to play, both with decent gameplay easy to get into, as well a awesome community very welcoming to new players!
Dated game mechanics lifted straight from their other MMO Star Trek Online (which is superior to this.) The look graphics are okay, no complaints. I've given this a chance twice now, and completed the tutorial twice, and that's where I stop. I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing afterward, it has me watch a bunch of ridiculous "tutorial videos" to explain certain aspects that I frankly just skipped. If your base game mechanics are so complicated that it takes a tutorial video to explain how they work, you really need a re-think. It's terrible. Equipping gear made no sense, has no impact visually, and feels completely tacked on as a way to provide bonuses. I hit level 6 and got gloves, a jacket, and two new abilities, one of which was my flight ability. With my build, I chose the jetpack. Imagine my disappointment when I didn't actually get a jet pack, no jet pack appears on my character, and visually I appear to have superman flight as a result. Wth? On top of the rather boring combat, I just couldn't be bothered to keep going. If your a superhero nut, this might be for you but if you want a good game, this isn't it.
this and city of heroes are two of the best superhero games ever, and this just got better with the devs coming back to support it. also one of the best character costumeizers in existence. worth playing.
Love this game. It is still the best super hero game out there !
Amazing character creation system, allowing for massive amounts of creativity. Missions and adventures can feel a smidge repetitive and some of the big quests can be hit or miss its still pretty fun to play a hero based game/mmo like this. My only main complaint is that there is no shield based powers i wanna make off brand captain america/soldier boy.
I have been playing since beta. the game is a great distraction. new content would be nice as the general grind gets a bit repetitive after a while but as far as the overarching stories, the game is great. Mechanics feel like superhero mechanics and if you can do custom builds, the game really shines. The base archtypes work great
After City of Heroes, Cryptic had originally intended to make a Marvel Comics universe MMO, but that was scrapped. They then secured the rights to the Champions pen-and-paper RPG and began making Champions Online — essentially competing directly with their own first game, City of Heroes. So in short, Champions Online is essentially the spiritual successor to City of Heroes, made by much of the same team that built it.
