'All hope abandon, ye who enter here' - Dante Alighieri This UNITY game is a first person view survival short where you will encounter many perma-death proximity obstacles ranging from fire, water, electrocution & those creatures who hate fast food (yes you, speed-runners!) the arms out in front of them Zombies! Your aim is to find your sister but, most frustratingly for the impatient Gamers, staying alive!! The surroundings and assets are decent meanwhile don't expect any Oscar performances from the Zombies because they seem to be just calling it in, I even noticed if you find a safe spot and stand still they will keep social distancing and happily admire the burning wreckage everywhere. Be warned though, if you aren't in a safe spot they won't think twice of playing Tag with you just don't expect to be alive at the end of the game. The Menu is straight forward there is: Start, choice of 3 languages and Exit; while in-game the ESC pauses the game and shows you the controls which are your typical UNITY ones but, oddly, there is no effects or sound options? Personally, I'd suggest having a screen resolution option alongside adding a sound & effects menu choice as it plays in full screen. The sounds are limited to timed events such as a car crashing from within a tunnel and a repetitive car-alarm (which would seriously benefit from being muted as a choice) outside of this the other main effects are the zombie growls and movements. The store-page suggests the game completion as 20-30minutes which may be achieveable if you know what you're doing but, considering there are no save points or checkpoints, you will find any perma-deaths mean you will be repeating your game-play from the starting point. Admittedly, this game is a trial and error speed run of figuring out which areas are death spots and working out your safest route to finding your lost sister but personally I'd like to see a checkpoint at minimum as many players will find the repetitive restarts tedious and quickly lose interest. There are achievements in this game which reflect the funny death variations and 1 that is for the speed-runners but beyond that this game would cater to players who can laugh at the many ways to die yet not get bored of attempting to problem solve the route to the ending. Overall, for a first game the developers have gone for a pick up & play that, much like physics games, you don't expect the world from yet you can get a short burst of enjoyment from it as long as you don't go in gung-ho expecting never to die!! This is meant to be a fun perma-death problem-solver that isn't meticulously story-driven or doesn't provide you with any means to defend yourself instead all you can do is get from A to B remembering to avoid areas that previously killed your character then you can save your sister!! ~~~ Liked what you see? Simply put, Breaking Lockdown is a meme game that's marketed as a full-fledged release. Spoiler alert: it isn't. The rice paper thin plot is that you have to get from your home to your girlfriend Jenny, all while avoiding insta-death hazards along the way. It's an obvious play on the current times, where it feels like everything in 2020 is trying to kill us, but rather than being tastefully done or integrating even a grain of fun, the game ends up just being tedious trial-and-error. The most fun that you'll have here is discovering the different ways that you can die, but even that becomes boring in less than ten minutes once you realize pretty much everything can, and will, kill you. Electrocution, fire, zombies, crazies, cars, tanks, carpet bombs. Your goal is to get from the starting side of the map, to the other side without dying. In essence, you're playing a 3D game of Frogger that has gotten a bit more intense. These are all stock assets, with bland ideas, pushing a good motive; stay home. Indeed, stay home, but don't waste your money on Breaking Lockdown. Received for free from the developer pre-release, didn't bother to try it until now as it's obvious to see just from the store page what kind of game this is. One might colloquially call it an asset flip: a pointless, generally horrible in every aspect game made up of copy/pasted stock assets with no real reason for existing on the Steam store. It's really just clutter. I don't really understand why this game exists, other than this being some practice by the developer, but then again it's all pre-made assets randomly placed about... not much practice? There really is nothing to enjoy. It's a very small and short game where the goal is to run from point A to point B without dying. Through trial-and-error it took me about 20 minutes to figure out what you need to do to reach the apartment that you're requested to go to without dying from the instant death traps. Just need to figure out, after death after death after death, which path is correct. Once you do figure it out it takes like 1 minute and 30 seconds from start to end. Touching anything remotely dangerous will instantly kill you, touching a zombie instantly kills you, touching water instantly drowns you, touching fire instantly kills you... you get the idea. I guess it could be a fun game for speedrunning? Maybe? Other than that I really do not see any point to this game, and it's definitely not worth any money. Maybe if it ever goes on a 90% discount or something. Movement is generally clunky, you get stuck on anything that is higher than what you are currently on, literally anything, and when you let go off W you don't stop going forwards until about half a second after you let it go.
For me, Breaking Lockdown reminds me of playing Star Wars: Jedi Knight (Dark Forces II). You've got the level design and layout, the bright, colourful lighting and the light puzzle elements. There is some trial and error to the game-play and certainly some of the in-game achievements relate to the multitude of ways that the player can be killed, but for the most part this is a game that just wants you to have some fun for an hour or so. I felt that the music and sounds worked well to create a surprising amount of atmosphere. The visuals just took me back to a kind of game that I loved to play (and still do) and I enjoyed a certain nostalgia when playing. The upshot is that, this is a first game by a first time game developer and as such you can expect a roughness that will undoubtedly improve with newer releases and newer games. Making games is a learning curve. I look forward to see what projects the dev tackles in the future.
Note: This is the first game of a single developer. Pros: I really like the menu screen/videos and the music choice Movement is smooth You can choose between 4 languages and now have a esc-menu with volume adjustments. Player-Deathanimation isn't that bad looking, sometimes funny Cons: The voice over at the beginning is a bit chopped off and doesn't transport the feelings for me. Also a bit loud. Some bugs and design choices that look like bugs. Overall: There are some bugs, it's a short game (and the first one). It was fun to play for a while and get all (most) the deaths and eventually Jenny!
Great first game from exciting new games maker. A short well timed game about an apocalypse, you leave the house to search for your girlfriend and are confronted with a variety of ways to die, from drowning to zombie and exploding electrical cars. Great fun and well worth your time and money for a laugh and some great details (love the graffiti on the walls) Looking forward to the next game.
Breaking Lockdown is a solid first game from the dev. Good voice acting and a creepy atmosphere. It's a fun game about escaping a city Lockdown. The game is pretty challenging and includes lots of achievements. Does Breaking Lockdown have some flaws and or minor bugs, yes, but considering the dev made the game in about a month and is just starting on his journey of making games I think it is pretty impressive! Making a game is not easy, and I am happy to support an indie dev who is following his dreams.
