You will be only just intrigued enough by this game to go past the point where you can't refund it anymore, and then it forces you to slowly walk through the same rooms over and over and over again. In a twist of cruel irony, the RNG gimmick that makes it more than just another exploration puzzle game is also the gimmick that prevents it from being fun to play. Strip the gimmick away or speed it all up to improve it and it is still just an utterly mediocre, dull puzzle game. I don't understand how this got so overrated in the first place. I will give credit to world building and atmosphere, though even there the game falters in many aspects with immersion-breaking anachronisms and oddities. I suppose it might all be explained in-universe if you can be bothered to torture yourself until RNG solves the puzzle for you but i tapped out after only 5h. Judging by other negative reviews, it seems like some end game puzzles were not even possible to solve without brute forcing / data mining. I'm glad i didnt waste more of my time on this.
Easily one of my favorite games. I am sure, that this game is not for everyone, matter of taste, but if you like puzzles, where you need to have either fully written blocknote, either 100+ screenshots to solve something - I can't recommend you this game enough. Atmosphere, music, puzzles, story. Everything made so good, that I watched
scene after reaching room 46
every time to the end. Also, I get the frustration of some people about rng about reaching some rooms to progress the story, but it happens. There are elements of roguelite in this game. GGs, now it's time to do some bingo runs.
incredibly repetetive for a game with puzzles you solved in your head 4 hours ago
Really thought this would click with me and by my kind of vibe, because I love games with a lot of exploration and puzzles. Instead the focus was far more on placing map tiles strategically, with puzzles basically depending on the luck of what tiles you draw. The vibe is more like the first phase of a game of Betrayal at House on the Hill, but without the climactic revelation at the end, which means that your ability to both explore and puzzle-solve are hampered by sheer random luck. Get a bad hand of tiles and, woops, your fun just goes out the window and you need to restart. A real shame, because I had such high hopes for this.
This game is not shy about unavoidably wasting your time. I really enjoyed like 25% of the game and the rest felt like a redundant slog. If you want exploration play outer wilds, if you want consistently engaging but satisfying puzzles play the witness, and if you want a roguelite play enter the gungeon. All those games are built meticulously for fun or a sense of progress. This game just feels like it isn’t, or at least doesn’t accomplish either of these goals consistently or even all that often.
