A game with real potential that is ruined by sticking way too close to its main inspiration
I don't like leaving negative reviews, because I fear they will be misinterpreted as hatred rather than constructive criticism. I didn't want to dislike this game. I came in to playing this game with an open heart and mind, and I wanted to like what I saw, but the truth is... Between Stops is a confused mess of a game.
DELTARUNE-"inspired"
In the vein of trying to be a DELTARUNE-like, it instead only appeals to what makes DELTARUNE good/popular, without ever achieving it in an honest, original fashion. The game appeals to the DELTARUNE fandom through random, disconnected, metaphorical dog-whistles, such as references to the game and its fans ("you moved in, it didn't take too long", "in this world, it's kill or b-", and the use of contrasting pink and yellow for special horizontal and vertical attacks, etc.), emotional beats (Sakou and the protagonist's relationship, especially in the beginning) and character actions (King-like character who appears at the beginning seems to use an effect resembling
The Roaring Knight's fullscreen SWOON frame
, protagonist falls to floor with noise resembling UNDERTALE's "tick" noise). It also rips most, if not all of the battle mechanics from DELTARUNE, with the additional mechanics unique to this game (like positioning, what ever that does) confusingly tacked on, creating a tiring and confusing experience. All the characters in Between Stops have one or more DELTARUNE equivalents. Sakou is an incredibly blatant Ralsei expy, down to their mannerisms, speech patterns, and powers, and Strivain seems to be a confusing mish-mash of both Rouxls and (Chapter 1's) Susie.
The Game Itself
The game seems rushed, like it was developed in a week. As such, the rooms seem strangely empty and devoid of both set-pieces and other characters. I understand the use of public domain music, but the small amount of music used was strangely unfitting for the situations they were used in, giving the game a 'first RPG on RPG Maker'-esque vibe. The art direction of the game is also confusing, as the inconsistent pixel-art sizing makes the game look unprofessional. Fights barely have any strategy to them, and sometimes taking (a huge amount of) damage is unavoidable on certain combined bullet patterns. The game seems cutscene and dialogue-heavy compared to its inspiration, with some of the cutscenes just being extended banter between two or more characters. (Also, the narrator shows up a lot in the first 10 minutes of the game, and all but disappears after that.) Throughout my playthrough (which I didn't finish, as the demo dragged on for too long), I got the constant feeling of "what is happening", as the game... just confused me. However, Between Stops does have potential, as its humour and worldbuilding is solid. I wish I could reccomend this game, but unfortunately, it has too many glaring flaws.

I a Beta Tester who did pacifist route and am the Evilest of Williams declare that good game. Loved the maid outfit <3
This game is just what I needed after beating Undertale, Deltarune ch1-4, OneShot, and Celeste! the battle system is slight copy-paste from Deltarune, but it's unique due to the fact that you have to move your party members to dodge attacks ON YOUR SIDE! And the way you attack too, it's like the music minigame in deltarune ch3 with the way the attack falls. Though I do have one complaint that you shouldn't take to heart. The hitboxes in the battle seem to be a bit bigger that they look, either that or I'm just bad. If it's acurate to the size of the sprite, I'd suggest making it maybe 5% smaller. That way it seems more fair and forgiving. But it doesnt have to change, i like a challenge, and that's the point. To feel challenging! I suggest everyone give this a try after beating UT+DR!
This game is AMAZING!! I went in not thinking much of it, however I was pleasantly surprised with the great dialogue and funny characters. You can also choose to spare or kill everyone with unique dialogue and story changes. Music is fantastic however some choices might not fit the pixel art aesthetic in my opinion. If you're already a fan of Undertale and Deltarune you're going to love this game! I would recommend!
Wonderfully made game, and the world building is Impeccable. 10/10 Difficulty, 10/10 worldbuilding/lore, 10/10 characters, overall 10/10. Thank you TooTiredDev!!!
THANK YOU TOO TIRED I AM THE GUY FROM THE COMMENTS AND I WILL SHOW ALL OF YOU WHY THIS IS AN AMAZING FANGAME TO PLAY WHILE WAITING FOR DELTARUNE CHAPTER 5: 1: it has new mechanics! There is a new color system: pink and yellow. The game will teach you what they do later in the story! 2: One character cant act. This guy who you encounter, cannot use act. He’s like Chapter 1 susie but you can control him! This adds a bit more challenge since most enemies need 3 ACTs! 3:the game is longer than deltarune chapter 1 and 2 combined! The game is 5-7 hours long! (Or so he LIED) which will be longer than both chapters, but will feel short since time moves fast these days… Haven’t gone through the entirety of the game yet, but I’M ENJOYING IT ! SO GET THE GAME RIGHT NOW!

THIS GAME THE GOOD ♥♥♥♥
This game is fantastic. It has lots of emotion. I personally am a big fan of games like deltarune and undertale, not just because of the bullet hell system or the music, but because you can tell the soul (no pun intended) and emotion he puts in his games. This is the vibe I get from your game and it is genuinely amazing you must have put lots of time into it and you should be really proud of yourself. The fight system is similar to deltarune but unique in a way I really like: you must dodge attacks out of the bullet hell and stand in different positions on the battlefield to not get hit. The music and general vibe is also amazing.
