I wanted to say yes, I really did, but the longer I played this game the less I enjoyed it. The main storyline and the haunting cases are fantastic, don't get me wrong. If that's the only portion of the game you want to do, then absolutely get this game. The stories will make you angry, make you laugh, make you cry. The writing in this game is fantastic. It's when you want to 100% the game that things start to fall apart. Combat gets insanely repetitive very quickly. There's encounters scattered all over the map so you'll be trying to explore and run into multiple combats that just make it annoying to explore areas. It's because of this alone that I'd recommend looking up a guide to get all the achievements in one playthrough because I can't imagine having to do this twice or more for all the endings. Quest text and hints are sometimes completely wrong in what they want you to do. You'll be told to explore an area and spend ages wandering around in the giant "explore here" circle on the map only to realize the game actually wanted you to pass through it. There will be no sign that this is the case, you'll just have to get fed up and leave the area and have the quest magically update. You'll approach a ritual circle and Antea will tell you there's a Specter nearby, so naturally you'll use the summon specter ritual, only for it to fail. Turns out you should've used the summon scourge ritual. Why? Who knows, least of all the person that's done this her whole life, apparently. Endless rifts dump you out somewhere random on the map instead of at the same place you went into them, just so the devs can put a treasure chest at the end of them so you have to complete them once in order to get an achievement. Why the chest couldn't have been put inside the rift or only appear outside it after it has been completed once, I'll never know. Meanwhile I'll be spending 10 minutes to get to the nearest campfire and back to where I just was because I needed to be in that area, not out in the middle of nowhere for no reason. So yeah, if you play this game like a linear, story-driven game it's fantastic. It's when you start to treat it like the open-world game it tries to be that it becomes more frustrating than fun. I'm 42 hours in, having finished the main storyline at around 8-10 hours, and I'm not even close to getting all the achievements yet. So, just know what you want out of the game before going in.
There is a good game hidden somewhere in this mess but I cannot recommend it in good faith. The amount of backtracking is insane. Combat is bad. Narrative is mediocre.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3 and PSVR2
You can view my full review here: https://youtu.be/-LSuogPbVbA I played the whole game in VR, mostly in 180 3D using the free UEVR mod by Praydog. Game is awesome, but best experienced in VR. There are many thrilling 3D effects throughout the game. It is honestly one of the best experiences I've had in VR. This is a narrative-driven game about 2 ghost-hunters or banishers. You'll come across many different stories & mysteries from the people in this fictional & fantastical location full of magic. What makes these stories special is how well-written they are. The characters have real motivations and have depth behind them. You'll come across moral dilemmas and have to question what the right thing to do is or if you should even try to do the right thing. Your choices matter and will have severe consequences. You will be the judge, jury, and executioner in many cases. Not only are the stories well-written, but also voice-acted superbly. The production values here are top notch. The game reminded me a lot of The Witcher 3 in that way. The game also has a lot of combat. While the combat is satisfying, the game does run into the problem of there being perhaps too much combat. There's not enough enemy variety or skill unlocks / upgrades to keep up with the constant barrage. I think the game would have better served to cut off some of the excess fat here. Less would have been more. The same can be said about the puzzles / platforming in this game. They start off nice, but they don't ever evolve into something more. The good news is that most of the side activities that can get repetitive are totally optional. The main story and side quests are the best part of the game and rarely disappoint. One last thing that I want to mention is the relationship between Red and Antea. It is among the best portrayals of a couple in gaming. I would say this is the best romantic love story in gaming I have ever come across. What are you willing to do for love is the ultimate question this game seeks to ask. For everyone who loves fleshed-out NPCs, manzy small stories that feel real and have meaningful choices. Cons: A lot of backtracking, repetitive fights and puzzles
This game is unlike any I've ever played to date. The combat is a breath of fresh air as it changes the way you take on enemies. Each quest is entirely unique as is each of the main boss fights. The story is filled with emotion as is each of the Haunting Cases. The exploration is vast, the puzzles tickle the brain, and the rewards are insane! It truly is one of the best games I've played.
The game got even better when I learned it is written in the same universe as Vampyr.
Not exactly a 10/10, but it is a very solid entry in this genre. Has a lot of charms, if a bit of a clunky combat system.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden – Ein echtes Highlight für mich! Kurz gesagt Ein wirklich gutes Spiel. ________________________________________ Story & Atmosphäre Grafisch spielt Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden auf einem sehr hohen Niveau. • Spannende Nebengeschichten machen viele repetitive Aufgaben deutlich angenehmer.
