Excellent game. Great story. Like the X-Files in 1600's America. Best voice work ev-ar. Combat mechanics of flipping to the spirit world and back are great fun. I don't approve of the Witcher 1 level design that forces you to run/climb/jump/duck/squeeze thru miles (and miles) of places you've been a dozen times before. Fast-Travel-To-Places-You've-Been-Before is a thing, at least since Skyrim, and would have cut game time in half easy. But it is a big, beautiful world, so there's that. Because of the travel squick I don't see the replayability, but the game is definitely worth full price, even for a single playthru.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a game with a strong narrative core that never really carries over into its gameplay. The story, the relationship between the main characters, and the moral choices are what keep things going, even if the sense of urgency gets diluted by how much the game pushes you into side content to reach certain endings. Early on, I actually struggled a lot with the decisions, especially when it came to condemning people, but that feeling slowly faded as the game went on, and choices started to feel more calculated than organic. Toward the end, parts of the story feel rushed, with ideas showing up too late and without enough development to really matter. The “slideshow” style finales also feel pretty underwhelming. On the gameplay side, things get repetitive pretty fast. Combat doesn’t evolve much, enemy variety is limited, and bosses are either damage sponges or really easy to trivialize. Progression doesn’t help much either, upgrades don’t really change how you play. I basically ended up using the musket for most of the game, since spamming headshots worked in almost every situation, which made most of the other mechanics feel kind of pointless. Exploration, puzzles, and level design don’t add much either, and often feel more like obstacles than actual gameplay. In the end, it’s a game that sticks with you more for its story than for actually playing it. For me, it’s a solid 6/10, but I definitely had to push myself through the final stretch, which ended up being pretty lackluster both story and gameplay wise. As a side note, I did notice some random framerate drops early on. Not sure if that’s an AMD thing or just the game being a bit rough performance-wise.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden — игра с сильным сюжетом и атмосферой, но техническими недочетами.
After heavy consideration, I do press the recommend button, but with one massive asterisk. First and foremost, the ambience of this game is absolutely phenomenal. The audio designer(s) should be award winners for this huge accomplishment; I don't think I've ever played a game where the ambient sounds made me feel so immersed as in this one. Especially in the large forest areas of the game the sounds were astonishing, as well as the attention to detail of the surroundings! It was obvious some nature lovers and/or researchers spent a bunch of time making the areas feel as realistic as possible (the way the flora grew according to shadows and closeness to water for example, as well as fitting branches, leaves and pinecones surrounding the correct trees and foliage, etc.). This game felt like an exceptionally exciting adventure for the first 8 hours or so; but that however, is also where the huge downside lies. The story continues to drag on for SO long! And there is SO much uninteresting "filler" content in between! The first act of the game makes you care about Red and Antea and the resolution of their story; and then you just have to solve a bunch of hardly relevant murder cases for like 20+ hours, most of which are hardly of any consequence, let alone have interesting story arcs. SOME of them do make you feel some mild interest, and I can definitely compliment the team on selling the heavy weight of death and loss throughout this game. But I simply cannot justify the amount of time this game asks of you, which is why it was so hard to press the thumbs up button. I absolutely do recommend meeting Red and Antea (which are also incredibly voice acted btw! As well as most of the rest of the cast) and I also do recommend exploring about New Eden for a good bit, but sadly there is no way for me to encourage you to play through the whole damn thing. I'd say, buy it in a sale, and then play it until you lose interest. Granting this a 7.5/10 overall, with the first few hours being a 9/10 and the latter being like a 5.5/10
