Largely a story based game, it's predictable, woke trash. Bad enough that I couldn't get look past it after a few hours.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a heartbreaking and compelling game about grief, loss and the lengths people are willing to go for the ones they love, and the ways in which people treat those they hate and fear. The game's story had me hooked (and heartbroken) from the start. The graphics and setting are visually stunning. Elements of the story and combat reminded me of Witcher 3 in some ways, the combat did get a bit repetitive at times though. Side quests/investigations were great. This game definitely flew under the radar for most folks and is an underappreciated gem.
This game has a beautiful narrative that is well-complemented by the stories told through investigating and resolving hauntings. Its tale is rich in text and subtext about life and death, love and loss, the uncertainty and unknowable nature of afterlife, the complex and imperfect nature of all humanity. I appreciated that there are a couple of opposing main end goals to work toward, but I found that only the option to allow the primary protagonist's love to ascend presented as appropriate to me. I actually cared quite a lot about the romantically bonded ghost-Banisher leads, Red and Antea, and I got teary-eyed at the end; it wasn't as though doing the "good" thing felt emotionally easy. But to try to bring Antea back would have required the sacrifice of a great many people, a compromise of the Banishers' values and quite a literal representation of how attachment and the failure to let go are ultimately selfish and destructive. This seemed like such a betrayal of everything good, everything they stood for, and I could not seriously contemplate pursuit of that goal. Others may feel differently, or may want to see how that ending plays out, and I respect that. Regardless, knowing that there were choices made every haunting case I resolved feel important. And again and again, I was amazed how I almost always came to understand the haunting spirit and the haunted; almost always, both parties would be sympathetic and tragic and less than "good" but far more than evil and deeply, deeply human. (That said, I still heartlessly banished a couple of unrepentantly abusive haunting ghosts and and even brought about the death of a psychopathic "victim" of a haunting, so there was certainly range in the types of stories contained within and no plunge into aimless moral relativism.) But that's all story and character. The game itself is torn between the excellent story and haunting system, several entertaining puzzles scattered across the world (that was nonetheless a bit overly worn by the end, given the amount of early-game railroading and Metroidvania-style need to circle back with new powers to unlock new sections), and the more mundane action-RPG combat sections that filled in much of the playtime. At first, I found the control scheme (using an Xbox controller) to be unintuitive and clunky, but I adapted to it and was soon fairly efficient in specter-banishing flourishes, switching between the mortal powers of Red and spiritual powers of Antea's ghost. Yet these segments, while true to the nature of these "Banishers," felt fairly substance-less, a necessary activity to get to the best parts of the game: the hauntings, main narrative, and gradually increased world-exploration tools. Banishers works as a great spiritual successor to Vampyr. It has shared lore and an entertainingly spooky and supernatural setting. It has the same awkward contrast between action-RPG combat and deeper narrative elements in the form of investigations and character interactions. It is less than perfect but an interesting work of collaborative art that is well worth engaging with. Flaws and all, I recommend it.
Game breaking bugs Waste of time
