At our core, we are fans first – not just of video games, but of the Backyard Sports franchise. Fans have asked for accessible and legal ways to play their original Backyard titles for years, and we are excited to deliver.
Without having access to the source code, there are hard limitations on the experience we can create. As an example, we can’t use the original 32bit code to support modern macOS, as even with an incredibly clever wrapper, macOS can’t execute the binaries.
Backyard Hockey ‘02 runs well, looks better than ever, is stacked with Steam achievements to test your mettle, and creates a new installation for digital preservation within the Backyard Sports catalog that allows the next generation of fans to fall in love with the game.

the game is completely bugged the ice is left to right but the [;ays up and down.
Game is near unplayable which sucks as its my favorite game.
This is probably my least favorite of the Backyard series. The gameplay is rough, even for the era, and it was not engaging in the way Backyard Baseball or Basketball can often be. The commentary was repetitive, again, even for the era and genre. It was a slog to get to 100% on this.

As a Backyard Baseball fan, I tried this game out to test how BB might run on my system. Then I found myself feeling a sense of nostalgia for a game I've never played before. Its not as fleshed out as BB but I know kid me would've loved this game too. I was very excited to see they brought Pablo over to this game and obviously he was my first pick. The difficulty options kept things new once I got used to the basic stuff. It only crashed on me twice and the first time was my fault, I was scrolling through the teams stats too fast. After a couple games, I realized the NPCs enter the tornado spin of doom trying to retrieve a puck that landed behind the goal. This means if you want to, you can take the puck and camp out behind the goal til the buzzer and no NPC can touch you (I couldn't replicate this with keyboard controls). But overall this is a cute and fun game that I enjoy.
Unfortunately, though this is a free game, this does not have the charm of the other Backyard sports games and that's due to the change in character design, voice acting, gameplay and customization. Character Design: A lot of the classic characters have different looks, and they don't really stand out anymore with the occasional few you can be like "Oh! That's Pablo" or "Hey Kenny's Back!" Some of the characters we know look more grown, which is normal when you got a game about kids, they are going to grow up eventually, but it took away from the charm a bit. It's almost like its the Backyard Sports Kids from TEMU. The pro's are cool and all but some of them don't even have voice lines that pop up. Voice Acting: To continue with the VA, some of the characters sound bland compared to how they did in other games, now again, its just them growing up probably, but the charm is lost with it, and in this one, the announcers are UNBAREABLE. Every little thing that happens they have to say something, and it feels like a trainwreck. Gameplay: To hectic for my taste, you have no idea what the power-ups do, and its just mashing the mouse and aiming at the goal or a teammate, hoping for the best. The penalty system is really weird and it seems like its rigged against you, I never won a Rock Paper Scissors in which the penalty should of been called on the other team. Customization: Finally the customization in this game is one of the weakest in all the franchise. I tried doing league play, and you cannot even use any of the licensed NHL teams from back then, which was a huge selling point to the other games. Unfortunate release, a forgotten game, give it a shot cause its free, but this one should of stayed forgotten.
Genuinely best Free hockey game out there I love it I super duper reccomend
juego bueno aunq medio trucho pq ya jugue todas las arenas y ni me las desbloquea
para quem gosta de um jogo old school é muito bom
Love Backyard Hockey! It’s too bad that the NHL teams aren’t in here. At least we got some of the NHL pros back.
