Atari-flavored CV. Hell yea. Will hold me over til we get a Bloodborne port.
Would you like another NES Castlevania? Because this is another NES Castlevania. That´s what the game sets out to be and it does so quite excellently. Love it!
Awakened Evil is the first game by Josiah and Jed Johnson, who actually sent me the game for free, which I really appreciate. Unfortunately, it very much feels like the kind of game someone put together in GameMaker in a few days. A tribute to old school platformers, Awakened Evil is basically a modern version of the first Castlevania. Similar enemies, level layouts, controls, and weapons in a game that shares just about every success and flaw of its inspiration. Now, to be fair it's clear there was a lot of effort put into this game. The music is pretty good, if basic, and the graphics are simple, but clear and occasionally impressively implemented. My only issues are with the gameplay. Movement is slow and deliberate, weapons all have a delay on their attacks, jumps force players to commit, and knockback will send you careening into pits. It's infuriating, but not poorly made. The game's major problem is that it doesn't do much to separate itself from Castlevania aside from maybe a neat level gimmick here or a decent boss fight there... but it's 2023, not 1986 and the infuriating attack delays, dropping like a rock off of cliffs, enemies flying in from offscreen, being unable to turn around quickly, annoying knockbacks, and stiff controls all around are all considered for a reason. If you want a retro throwback in probably the most accurate way possible, I could maybe see you having fun with this game, but for me it's just a little too faithful to the source material to hold up in the modern day. I BARELY give it a recommend for that specific niche only, but anyone else should look elsewhere.
This was a lot of fun. Definitely pick this one up if you like retro games. The expert mode really raises the challenge from the base game. It's no joke!
Great little Castlevania inspired action game.
Played through normal mode and had an absolute blast. Everything I loved about the original Castlevania, the stiff jumping, the medusa heads (here burning skulls), the tough pattern-based boss battles, it's all here. Can't wait to test my skill in expert mode!
Um bom Classic Castlevania like.
The game is a true love letter to the retro games, mainly the Castlevania platformer ones. The game is just really fun to play, and from what I played everything works perfectly and the challenge is there, especially on Expert difficulty. Totally recommend the game!
