Damn fighting games are cool again
The core game looks really fun and solid, but I've got bad vibes regarding everything surrounding it all. This is a game that's clearly designed by people who love both Avatar and fighting games, but it's also really obvious they've been forced to release much too soon. Three of the characters lack the polish and attention to detail that the other nine have and are stated to get reworks in the future (Avatar Aang, Nightmare Korra, and Firelord Ozai). The character guides are rather useless; I dare say they probably shouldn't have even been included because it's so unnecessarily intimidating. They just have a short blurb about a mechanic, then have you string an offensive sequence without any explanation tying the lesson to the exercise. If you're a newbie that just wants to practice against the computer or try to do Story Mode, you're out of luck because there's no difficulty slider. Perhaps the cardinal sin, the game lacks a ranked mode on release. If the game had released as Early Access or as some sort of "Competitive Edition" where only online and training mode were released while the devs keep cooking, I might have been willing to tough this out and give these guys the benefit of the doubt. There's a clear sign of love in the gameplay, animation, and art that just isn't there in the rest of the package. Couple that with Paramount's big corporate logo in the opening, and this is a dance I already know too well. I'll get my refund while I can; maybe I'll come back if the devs can turn this around.
Incredibly fun and addicting fighting game
Finally some good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ food
All i do is play fighting games. It's a problem. This fighting game specifically is some of the most fun I've had with the genre in like a decade. It released in a barebones, unfinished state and it still clears most fighting games. Buy it, play it.
As someone who's never played a fighting game before (except the odd SSB game with friends) I've been really enjoying Avatar. If you are someone who loves the Avatar world but is unsure about trying to get into fighting games, I believe you have nothing to worry about :) The game has lots of tutorials both in-game and on YouTube that make picking it up fun and easy, while providing seemingly infinte room to grow!
Not at all "casual player" friendly. I've played a few fighting games over the years (Injustice, Mortal Kombat X, Super Smash Bros), but this game is kicking my ass. Story Mode chapter 1 feels impossible, as I cannot get more than a few hits on Katara (and more than once she won the fight without me scoring a single hit). The tutorials are too complex, covering combos and expecting you to have perfect timing. Graphics look amazing, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ was it soul crushing to play. If you want to attract casual fans, consider the following: 1) adjust the difficulty and/or add difficulty settings for the story/AI characters 2) make a "How to Play" tutorial that is more than just a "settinga menu" explaining button combos! Teach us the basics of blocking! Explain the difference between attacks A, B, and C! Build up to showing us chaining attacks/combos (e.g. start with "here's how to block followed by a basic attack" and work up to "here's how to air attack, dash, reach attack, dash, grab, throw, dash, launch attack, and chain A, B, and C to finish them off!") Like I loved Injustice: Gods Among Us, especially because it had tutorials that held my noob hand and taught me the *basic* basics like blocking and which attack did what
