A Fun MMO Revival That Shows Promise Despite Its Rough Edges
Going into Ascend: Reborn, I wasn't expecting a massive AAA MMO experience, and honestly, that's probably the best mindset to have. This is very much a community-driven MMORPG project that focuses on bringing back the feeling of older-school online RPGs rather than competing with the giants of the genre. Because of that, I found myself enjoying it more than I expected. The first thing that stood out to me was the sense of progression. Unlike many modern MMOs that rush players through the early game, Ascend: Reborn takes a slower approach. Leveling, exploring, gathering equipment, and improving your character all feel like they matter. There's a satisfying sense of growth that reminded me of older online RPGs where the journey was just as important as the endgame. Combat is fairly straightforward but enjoyable enough. It isn't the most advanced combat system you'll find, but it works well within the game's scope. Fighting monsters, completing quests, and slowly becoming stronger creates a relaxing gameplay loop that MMO fans will immediately recognize. The community aspect is probably one of the game's strongest points. Since the player base isn't enormous, encounters with other players feel more personal. Whether grouping up for content or simply chatting while progressing, there's a stronger social feeling than in many larger MMOs where everyone rushes through content without interacting. Visually, the game is clearly limited by its budget and scope. Character models, environments, and animations aren't going to impress anyone looking for cutting-edge graphics. However, the world has a certain charm to it, and after a while I stopped focusing on the technical limitations and just enjoyed the adventure. That said, the game definitely has rough edges. Quest design can become repetitive, some systems feel outdated, and there are moments where the lack of polish becomes noticeable. New players may also find certain mechanics confusing because explanations aren't always as clear as they could be. The story isn't really the main attraction here. There is lore and world-building present, but most players will probably remember the progression, exploration, and multiplayer interactions more than any specific narrative moments. Audio does its job without being particularly memorable. The music fits the fantasy setting well enough, and sound effects are serviceable, but neither stands out as a major highlight. Overall, Ascend: Reborn isn't trying to reinvent the MMO genre. Instead, it focuses on delivering a classic online RPG experience with a dedicated community and a rewarding progression system. It has flaws, but if you're someone who misses the slower-paced MMO style of the past, there's a good chance you'll find something to enjoy here.
The Good:
- Rewarding character progression and leveling - Strong sense of community and player interaction - Captures the feel of classic MMOs
The Bad:
- Dated visuals and animations - Repetitive quest design at times - Some systems lack polish and clear explanations
Ratings:
Overall: 7/10 Visual: 6/10 Gameplay: 7/10 Story: 6/10 Audio: 6/10 Playability: 7/10
