ARK: Survival Evolved is one of those games that starts out as a simple survival experience and slowly turns into a full-time dinosaur-based second job. You spawn on a beach wearing absolutely nothing, punch a tree until your hands hate you, and convince yourself that you're going to build a nice little house and live a peaceful life. Five minutes later, a dinosaur has eaten you. So you respawn. Then another dinosaur eats you. Eventually you figure out how to make weapons, build a proper base, tame some dinosaurs, and start feeling pretty confident. That's when ARK reminds you that confidence is just another resource it can take away from you. The progression is probably the biggest reason I kept coming back. You start with rocks and sticks and eventually find yourself riding around on dinosaurs with an industrial-sized factory in your backyard. At some point you're casually harvesting metal with a dinosaur while thinking about which prehistoric creature you're going to genetically engineer into your personal murder machine. And the dinosaurs are what make the whole experience so memorable. Taming your first creature feels like a major achievement. You spend forever knocking it unconscious, feeding it the right food, protecting it from everything within a five-mile radius, and praying that nothing comes along and ruins the entire process. Then you finally tame it. You name it. You become emotionally attached to it. And three days later it gets killed by something that was approximately 40 levels higher than it. ARK doesn't care about your feelings. The survival mechanics can also be brutal. Food, water, temperature, weight, durability, stamina—everything is constantly trying to kill you. You can be completely prepared for an expedition and still end up freezing to death because you forgot to bring enough clothes. And don't even get me started on caves. You enter a cave thinking you're going to grab some artifact. You leave the cave twelve minutes later with 3 HP, no armor, half your dinosaurs dead, and a deep personal hatred for spiders. Then there's the building system, which starts simple enough before eventually turning you into an architect who spends two hours trying to get a staircase to snap correctly. The game is also at its best when you're playing with friends. One person is gathering resources, another is taming dinosaurs, someone is building the base, and there's always one idiot who somehow manages to get everyone killed. That idiot is usually me. ARK: Survival Evolved is janky, frustrating, grindy, occasionally unfair, and absolutely capable of consuming your entire weekend without you realizing it. But underneath all of that is one of the most memorable survival games ever made. It's not about surviving the island. It's about becoming powerful enough that the island has to start surviving you. 10/10. Lost more dinosaurs than I have friends.

Whoever at wildcard thought giving the game "improved" textures (and cloning the game which turned into ASA), not fixing bugs, and killing their own games like ATLAS was a good idea should be in prison! (Wildcard and Snail Games, I hate to be a jerk, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...FOR THE LOVE OF GOD...FIX YOUR GAMES!!!! I will NEVER give you anymore of my storage space or playtime hours until you GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER...)
