This game is actually very good. Don't listen to the grievers. If you liked the first one, you will like this one as well. It works and feels exactly the same way, just with 10 times as much stuff to unlock. They really increased variety by several notches. Levels are great, enemies are fun to kill, and the overall fun factor for a coop shooter like this is definitively present. Just approached it like the first one. Go solo first and level up a few roles and weapons on normal difficulty. Most stuff is locked behind missions and you should unlock it first before going coop. Marauder and duelist were my first choices. Some of the other classes are no fun to play solo but you will realize that after 10 minutes into the mission. Missions always follow the same pattern: Activate something, shoot enemies, rinse and repeat until you see a sentry for pickup. That means tower-defense-time, and end of the mission. But the first one worked exactly the same way... The game runs absolutely solid on my rig, above 80 FPS on 4K ultra with DLSS on quality. There are some slight dips when dozens of enemies crawl out of the cracks at the same time, but that is to be expectd. However, there are a few things that feel a little off. The characters and facial animations look really bad, some voice actors are terrible, and a lot of dialogues are absolutely unworthy of an Alien title. It's also a strange choice to make almost everyone of importance on deck female. I don't mind at all but it sticks out immediately. But this does not ruin the overall experience at all because it's not about the story and the characters but about killing aliens and synth on higher difficulties with some capable friends.
I'm gonna say that this game has some notable improvements over the first game, but .. it comes with some glaring issues. 1. It is not well built. Drones kind of stutter step around to the point you can't hit them easily, enemies get stuck in the roof and walls of hallways, etc. 2. I keep having issues where I get stuck at the end of a mid-mission cutscene and the only way out of it is to alt+f4 and rejoin. This caused me to rage quit after it happened mid-second to last mission. 3. The writing of Piper and Raptor is god awful. And you will be stuck listening to Piper more than anyone else. It's pretty terrible. Only idiots complain that the main cast is mostly female but these two talk in terrible ways and they do not appreciate the situation of you facing off for your life. If I had to deal with one or the other okay. But these characters are just caricatures. One inch depth of personality. Who wrote these two? 4. The sheer bugs of the character models is insane. Guns don't sit in grips, emotes dont work, etc 5. Sometimes you just can't pick up med packs for some reason. 6. Mid..mission..cutscenes... why?
I put 460 hours into the first game—which I found repetitive and riddled with flaws, yet simultaneously full of merit, very fun, and promising for a young studio. I don't know what kind of dark magic was at work, but after seeing the trailers for the sequel and reflecting on my time with the original, I genuinely expected a banger. Specifically, I expected the first game's major strengths to carry over: impeccable art direction, stylish levels featuring memorable large chambers, simple yet effective gameplay, and a high-level tactical element. Naturally, I also expected this second installment to serve as a vehicle for welcome new features and evolutions—such as an organic horde and enemy system (moving away from the first game's rigidly scripted encounters) to drastically boost replayability. This is exactly what titles like Vermintide and Darktide have been doing for years. It is, of course, a disappointment on almost every level. If I had to summarize the game's strengths: the first three levels. Thanks to their extraordinary "Hadley's Hope" art direction, they are an absolute feast for the eyes and the imagination—and, honestly, that’s about it. Coincidentally, these were the levels most heavily featured in trailers and gameplay videos, as if the developers had poured 90% of their total effort into them. Also worth mentioning is the card and consumable system, which represents a genuine upgrade over the first game. The list of weaknesses, on the other hand, is incredibly long: every weapon seems to have suffered a downgrade in terms of feel and impact. The smartgun, pulse rifle, and heavy flamer all feel terrible; there’s no sense of recoil or kick upon firing, and the sound effects are weak and lackluster. The game casts you as futuristic soldiers with futuristic guns, unleashing heavy fire on hordes of monsters—and even that gets boring fast. None of the levels after the first four left a lasting impression or made me want to go back. The game set itself misguided goals—like introducing a ton of new enemy types. Ultimately, these new enemies just distance us from the Xenomorph, diluting the Alien experience into a generic sci-fi hodgepodge; it feels like an attempt to cram in every element of the franchise just to please everyone. To me, that’s a terrible artistic choice. Aliens should have made up 70–80% of the bestiary throughout the campaign. And frankly, everything related to the Ridley Scott-esque mess of Prometheus and its successors could have stayed on the cutting room floor. On top of that, the level design and combat layout feel like a chaotic disaster, seemingly calibrated to prevent tactical play. Let me explain: unlike the first game, I noticed countless rooms where the devs placed vents ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE—sometimes every 3 or 4 meters. It feels like they wanted to eliminate any "safe spots," forcing players to keep moving and engage in melee combat while constantly dealing with a chaotic mess of enemies—either right in their faces or at ridiculous distances. It’s a design choice that clashes badly with the game's core mechanics, in my opinion. That’s already a pretty grim verdict, but if I had to nitpick further, I’d say the music is rubbish compared to the first game, and the plot is mind-bogglingly stupid—as are the characters involved. It’s all been done to death—rehashed and microwaved fourteen times over—and it’s tainted by some frankly heavy-handed DEI undertones. As far as I know, there’s still no in-game text chat—seriously, guys... I get the feeling that, just like in the first game, some perks are buggy and don't work as intended. Drones, Warriors, and Praetorians teleport around. The vents are basically absolutely hideous black squares. And I’m probably forgetting a few other things. In some levels, you get wave after wave of enemies arriving in perfectly uniform squads—in a specific order, single file—giving the whole thing a really archaic, brain-dead arcade shooter vibe. This ties back to what I said earlier about the need to randomize at least some of the spawns... Anyway. Selling this for 50 bucks is a total slap in the face. I used to like this franchise and this studio, but that was back then.
Imagine watching YT videos claiming it’s a bad game, buying it anyway without knowing how to play, complaining later because you don’t know how to play as a team and can’t get past the prologue, and then leaving a negative review: I have just perfectly described the type of person who leaves negative comments about this game.
I would be foolish to say I don't recommend this game after spending over 50hrs in it during launch week, I do plan on getting the 100% in this game. I've attained rank 10 in all the available classes and maxed out ranks for all the weapons. So I'd say I've given it a good shot. If you liked Aliens Fireteam Elite 1 for it's gameplay and build crafting. Then you'll enjoy the sequel. It's simple as that. It does what the original did, and evolves a lot of it, making for deeper gameplay at times and build crafting. I was not blown away by the story, but the cutscenes were a particular highlight for me, as well as NPCs actually talking to you now. There are definitely technical issues with the game. I played on GeforceNOW with their 5080 machines and even then I had the very rare slideshow for a few seconds. There's still some input issues sometimes as well with items. honestly there's a few bugs, and I could be here for a bit highlighting them, but they didn't destroy my enjoyment of the game. Cold Iron are aware of them, and the game improved drastically after it's Day 1 patch. Overall, and this may sound ungrateful, but I don't think as much love was put into the story as could have been - but it was a really great time thinking through strategies and build crafting stuff that worked for me. I hope there's a DLC coming, and maybe plans for a trilogy in this series with a bit more thought put into the lore of the Alien Universe,
Don't listen to the newbies, if you played the first one and found some joy in it, you WILL find this game fun.
