Reviews
I should preface this review by saying that I'm a long-standing fan of the Alien franchise, and have loved the IP for a very long time. That being said, this game iterates on the first one in many ways, that make for very compelling gameplay. I understand that many people have encountered bugs, but rest assured - that hasn't been my experience. Fortune is a factor in this, I believe - some people are unluckily running into AI glitches, broken doors, and such. I haven't had any of those issues. However, the issues I did run into were problematic - but easily circumvented. That said, in a finished, released, supposedly 'polished' game, these things shouldn't happen. I'll begin with the positives, *As a Standalone Title* Pros: > Character customisation, while simple, isn't terrible. I feel like my Marine looked very cool, and I enjoyed unlocking a lot of new visual options. > The new weapon mechanics are fun, compelling, and rewarding to pay attention to. Weapons have split stats between damage, and stopping power. Damage does exactly what it says on the tin, reducing enemy hit-points iteratively with each attack. Stopping power however is where things become much more intriguing. This stat, common across all weapons, causes the enemies to flinch, lose their footing, get knocked down, etc. - It can be very impactful, and lends the weapons a real feel of 'mass' in their use. > Visual Spectacle was fantastic. The set-pieces are clean (Not literally!), well-crafted, and look great. The classic aliens retro-scifi is very much a feature here, with the old-school white-grey/cream plastics, the heavy duty build quality, and the fantastically stylistic text-only / character-based displays. The aliens look great as ever, with more visual distinction being introduced for various enemy types (Pay close attention to the front portion of the 'Drone's' head!). > The game's weapons have new features, as compared to the first game - there is now a secondary fire functionality, allowing for certain iconic weapons to have their particular iconic features...! (I'll let you figure it out in-game, because it really is a delight, and if you're an Aliens fan it'll have you whooping and hollering like I was! :D) > Replayability seems pretty high - while the dialogue on the ship itself seems a little forced or stiff at times, (Some characters are WAY better acted / written than others!), the dialogue and actual gameplay in the missions is really solid, making for a fun if not especially complicated narrative. The story-beats are predictable, but still quite enjoyable, and the encounters in the game do show adequate variety to make things interesting after the first run-through. I think that's enough for the pro's for now, I'll perhaps come back to it if anything else really jumps out at me. Now for the con's. Cons: > The new mechanics are especially fun and interesting, but some of them feel perhaps a little underused and punishing. Stamina for one is a big sticking point for me and my fireteam - we all agree that while the melee is exceptionally useful, and perhaps could be abused - the dodging mechanic is where the real problem is. The fact that both of the 'damage mitigation' options rely on the same pool of stamina is harsh and unforgiving. It's not gamebreaking, but it almost feels like it's built on the idea of creating frustration. It might have been better to not limit dodging (Since you can't fire on the enemy while dodging, and they can still hurt you with certain attacks!), while keeping melee as it is. > Lack of optimisation rears its ugly heads in this one as it has with many other recent games. I'm running a very powerful system with no lack of memory, CPU clock rates, and a 4090 GPU (Of infamous reputation, but genuinely a very good unit!), and yet still the cut-scenes / animations did not perform even remotely smoothly. This game is installed on a very fast SSD, and yet the animations between scenes or levels tripped and stuttered horribly. On certain missions, there were 'ghost hiccups' or moments where the game appeared to stutter in a significant way. > Freezes - During certain missions, and at certain times, the game would appear to entirely freeze for multiple seconds (Sometimes as many as 8 - 12!!), which gave me and my entire fireteam the impression the game was about to crash entirely and drop the mission. Not a great thing to have happening on a recently-released title that was shadow-dropped to steam with no beta phase, no obvious testing, and no news! > Reconnect To Fireteam. This one was a real bugbear among me and my team - We would perhaps be a little bit more willing to forgive and forget with some of these problems if not for the completely broken, non-functional 'reconnect to fireteam' functionality that is *supposedly* within the game. Not one, single, measley time did this feature work. Every time the game crashed or a host had a problem, it was back to the endeavor to regroup, because the reconnect function *instantly* failed every single time. > Difficulty Scaling on higher difficulties. The game gives you the option to start on intense or extreme, and while for certain things the claims of the developer about 'bullet sponges' are to some extent true - for many others, it is clearly and flagrantly false. The runners aren't what you'd call 'tanky' on the higher difficulties, but they definitely take more than their fair share of hits. Including to the weak spots. The marksman rifle was failing to kill runners with a single headshot (Which is kind of the weapons whole thing, no?), and the pulse rifles had to deliver multiple impacts to this very wriggly hitbox to put them down. Perhaps it would have been better to keep them at 'standard' difficulty levels of durability, while drastically increasing their numbers instead. It's understandable at least for the elites and specials to eat more rounds on the higher difficulties, though. All in all, this game represents another unambitious but still ENTIRELY ENJOYABLE experience in the aliens franchise - and while many might pan the game for being so unambitious, I feel like after the years of 'ambitious but TERRIBLE' releases the franchise had, these kinds of game are really quite good and fun. You can enjoy the storyline, as there's something there. Or you can turn off your brain and go splat bugs - that's fun too. With a new, full - if short - campaign, new enemies, new weapons, new mechanics, and newer visuals, as well as revisited 4-player balance, interesting environments, and corporate-boogly-woogliness, Aliens Fireteam Elite 2 delivers more of what the first one did, with enough iteration to justify its existence as a separate title. It's a fun game, and for aliens fans I can really recommend. To a casual gamer, I'd say wait for a sale or go into this game with your eyes open - it's got some issues, which may or may not be fixed in time - but it's a good one to enjoy some 'THEY'RE COMING OUTT'A THE DAMN WALLS!' pulse-pounding brrrrt'ing. I give it a solid but not perfect 7 out of 10 pharyngeal jaws. >
The gameplay is actually really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good, which makes this even more frustrating. The weapons feel great, the Xenomorphs are fun to fight, and underneath everything there's a solid Aliens game here. Unfortunately, apparently I didn't enlist in the Colonial Marines. I accidentally joined an emotional-support group that happens to carry pulse rifles. Every five minutes I'm being briefed by another female marine character who feels like she was recruited by the marine Corp DEI program. I'm waiting for my next mission objective to be “Destroy the Xenomorph hive, then report to HR for your mandatory wellbeing check-in.” And then there's calling a clearly female commander “sir.” Come on. Nothing screams gritty futuristic military immersion quite like LGBTQ activism. “Sir, Xenomorphs have breached the perimeter!” “Excellent. Before engaging, Marines, please use the toilet, and remember that Weyland-Yutani values diversity, inclusion and psychological safety. Remember, correct pronouns are a marines safe space" Alien never needed this crap. Ripley became one of cinema's greatest female protagonists because she was a brilliant character, not because the audience needed to be repeatedly reminded that somebody had satisfied a representation spreadsheet. Give me believable characters. Give me Marines who actually feel like Marines. Give me commanders who sound like they belong commanding soldiers into a Xenomorph-infested deathtrap. I came here to kill aliens, not attend Weyland-Yutani's annual Women in Leadership seminar.
I don't see what people have been ranting about. The game's genuinely fun, with how varied the different xenos are, along with the synths trying to protect their research. The variety of weapons, classes, and perks just makes playing a blast.
Every aspect is a downgrade from the first. I am not sure if daybreak made them push it out the door but the first game was a hidden gem. This feels like an insult to it and a cheap copy of it.
Don't be looking for some epic story telling, it is a horde shooter on the tin. If you enjoyed the first one then you will enjoy this one.
There are far too many hard-locks where the game can't proceed due to a bug or two, doors shutting behind us, and sometimes locking up our companions on the other side, starting an objective wont work unless all fireteam members are together, and genuinely, the price is not worth it, you'd expect a price tag like this to give equal results, but I believe they mistook this game's pricing for movie pricing, which makes it more ridiculous when it comes to the dialogues in the game, it feels so half-hearted or half-baked, either way, I'd recommend waiting a few months, maybe get it when it's on sale, as of right now, there are a whole lot of other horde shooter games that's worth their price and are actually playable. hell, let's just go back to Left 4 dead 2 at this point.
一团糟,就算价格下来的也不推荐,感觉和第一部没什么区别。。。很无聊的游戏!
Hey, hot shot. I like your game, hot shot. But I do think there's some problem with it, hot shot. Notably, hot shot, the fact that you see, hot shot, there's no way to skip the cut scenes you've made, hot shot. These cutscenes not only at about 20fps, but also just add annoyance after you've done the same mission 10 times. So, hot shot, I'd definitely add that. Apart from that, hot shot. Can we stop getting called 'hot shot' every 2 seconds? Otherwise good game so far. Thanks, Hot shot.
Having helped a few friends through the story, clearing all the classes in record time thanks to a willingness to just roll with higher difficulty cards and doing the only sensible thing and setting voices to 0 (Why AM I STILL HEARING THEM IN MISSION AT ALL.) I'll tell you the good, the bad and the ugly. The good: The game is more or less using the first game's team's work so it looks like Aliens and the music is more or less good enough even if it's utterly forgettable. Your Marines look alright. The critters are the same models from the last game with a few remixed enemies. Running the game with 'High Threat Environment IV' (+100% damage to enemies and friends) makes the game feel considerably better. If you have two hands and a pulse you can probably safely run with the full clown fiesta runs leading to you hitting level 8-10 depending in 4-5 missions. At least this gets into the chaotic fun territory. The mediocre: The levels don't have variations to them like FTE1 did. They were minor variations, but they did help. The gun selection is meh. I'm half convinced they balanced the game around controller users because, to borrow the joke, the Pranali guns explicitly are all best on Fullest Auto because none of them have significant recoil. The gun attachments are largely superfluous feeling. You can do some experimentation and tweaking, but it's largely arranging deck furniture on the Titanic. The Synths are easier to fight now to the point that the Pike will just insta-pop the heavies. They're somewhere in between good and bad to fight now because of it. The new toybox looking robots are just there. They added a 4th player slot, but the level design still feels claustrophobic enough to make me think that was a later decision in the dev cycle. The class building is still good. The remixed prior game's classes are mostly fine. The changes are sometimes dubious. Overclock going to the medic's already overloaded kit feels like it was slotted there for Specialist fodder as an example. Specialist is limited to Q and E abilities, not any pair of abilities. Ignore the weirdos saying it would be a balance problem. The game's a mess balance wise already. At least Specialist would let you get weird that way. The bad: Oh, there's a lot here. Let's get the writing out of the way. It's abysmal. Ko is not the same pilot from the first game despite sharing the same model. They got rid of Herrera, Esther (More on that later) and Hoenikker and replaced them with "Dad Jokes" and "Cocaaaaaaaine". Sorry, Raptor and Piper. There is no attempt to build tension. The writing genuinely feels like a bad fan-fic writer of Marvel's trash got slapped over the Aliens setting with such highlights as you telling two separate higher ranking people that they're screw ups in harsher language to their face. Your Marine whining "I'm not here to hunt people, I'm here to hunt bugs." Which would at least fly if we were mercs, not Marines. Piper any time she speaks. Shipp apologizing to you because you saw her kill a person and finally! Your Marine's barks. Almost all of them. "Sharp sticks mfer" 'I endanger species" 'Resupply or die folksresupplyordiefolksresupplyordiefolks" just to give you the authentic take on that last one. If you've made it this far and you're considering it. Mute the voices, skip the plot. Esther gets Buzz Lightyear factory reset and has like 3 lines of dialogue. Even on missions where you'd think she'd reprise her role as guide through things like the Engineer ship. I don't know why. The levels aren't bad, but they aren't good. That above lack of mission variety becomes a negative if you're doing more than one or two playthroughs with friends. They have such blatantly obvious triggers for hordes you can usually eyeball them in later missions on your first playthrough. There are no horde variations. No spawn variations. No direction mixups or anything else. Once you learn it, you can probably do a blindfold run within reason. The forced cutscenes are obnoxious since they're mid-mission and reset your positioning. Some of the weapons are still not worth using with special mention going to the Hel for being bad on every conceivable level when compared to literally any other in-slot weapon. The elemental weakness system feels tacked on and I only really noticed it in the same territory I saw it in 1, don't try to flamer the synths. The game is full of non-Xenomorph bugs. If you can't pick an item up, fire your pistol and reload so you can on that note. The pacing is abysmal if you are paying attention to the plot, even if it's a vain bid to MST3k it. The hub area is now reduced to the command deck where standing within a few feet of any NPC has them rambling constantly. The two final missions lead into each other and that's caused a slew of bugs. The final mission itself will kill you if you watch the cutscenes and you'll fail because they don't despawn the enemies or anything else and they'll kill you while you're locked into watching the dumbest ending I've seen in years. The enemy variety in-mission is less interesting. The new pathogen specials aren't remotely threatening or interesting to fight and the only fun thing of note about them was dubbing them failed Resident Evil designs. And the only nice thing I've got to say about the plot is the unintentional comedy of the main villain being so over the top Wey-Yu stepped in and told her she was going too far. tl;dr The game is full of bugs, alien bugs, pathogen bugs, buggy synths, more bugs, largely sterile level designs once you learn what they're up to, guns that have all been filed down to be 'on par' failing to realize this still makes some weapons leagues better and some of the worst writing and acting I've seen since Tom Servo resorted to chanting "Shut up" at the screen repeatedly in Alien from LA. Get this game on a steep discount. Grab the first instead. Or hell, grab World War Z.
Like the first one but better simple as that. As for the review bombing seems to be a bunch of negative jackasses, its not everything I have ever wanted in a game ever so I hate it types. Also people who don't understand the pricing you don't HAVE to buy the DLC the base game does not require it so saying its $70 is a bald face lie just FYI.
