FIX YOUR DAMN GAME
In it's current state the game isn't ready for launch. I've been stuck in a wall multiple times, I can't pick up first aids kits intermittently, my character gets magnetized to the floor sometimes stopping me from running or walking very fast, enemies glitch out and don't move, and the difficulty is completely broken. Unless you have 4 players, you will struggle to finish even an intense level mission. I've finished Fireteam 1 on Insane difficulty, so I'm not a newb. The game shouldn't be designed around 4 players when you will struggle to find 4 players to play with in matchmaking. (Feel free to add me if you're in the Oceania region)
First game was a lot of fun even though I started it when it was pretty much dead. This second one was the first game I have refunded. The writing is atrocious and paired with horrid cutscenes and stupid "dialogue choices" that just functions to get to the same main ending dialogue makes it even more jarring. I hate using the word when trying to be serious, but I did cringe the first time I saw Ko's animations while waxing moronic in her ramblings. Somehow the entire female squad is amazing all stars, but get their donkeys handed to them after deciding it was a good idea to crash. Bear in mind this is mostly the same crew that survived the first game. The 90 percent F 10 percent M crew's response? YOU the player are the moron for bothering to do your job. Roger that SIR (Ma'am)! The colonel is now a general and the new responsibilities involved are doing the same job in an uglier environment and getting nonsensical nicknames from the crew. Raptor sounds like a caricature of Southeast Asians in speech and mannerisms and his dialogue is like asking AI to make twenty puns, fortune cookie lines, with some Alien buzzwords. The upgrade guy is irrelevant and could be a computer kiosk. At least the added Gamma and gave the synths different loadouts. During gameplay I had multiple instances of the loading screen remaining after the game started with no input short of closing the game fixing it. The aliens get stuck all over the place and just look at you. As other have said the levels are too small for a four man squad and the bots love getting in the way. Many enemies just swam and despawn standing upright (noticeably the drones) which was jarring. Items and abilities feel worse. The weapon upgrades seem like an improvement and I was glad they added love for the sidearm. Melees are now a stun baton that cannot be spammed. Frame drops, weird animations, character jittering is pretty common. The gameplay is repetitive to the point of comedy. They have you run down sections with tons of exploding barrels to an objective and wouldn't you know you're somehow going back the way you came. Now for the Alien fan rant (Alien and the Thing were my favorite movies at 10): The entire story affecting crew minus the village idiot being women is weird. Yes it could be argued that Ripley was a "girlboss" but she was competent and worked with mostly macho men in an environment of terror where being a roided out behemoth wouldn't have save you from the Alien. Ripley's guile, determination, experience, a lot of LUCK, and the sacrifice of those macho men (even the ones that were antagonistic at first) helped her survive. There is no Captain Dallas. There is no Apone. No Hicks, no Hudson, no Bishop. There is also no RIPLEY or VASQUEZ. There is no one any of these characters would have wanted to have their back. Ko is pathetic, the new woman is five tropes rolled into one. General Shipp is authoritative uselessness. Do they need all throwbacks? No. But when they throw in all the old tropes (minus the men) and spam one liners maybe make the characters more in line with the source material. The female crew is incompetent, unprofessional ( to a nonsensical degree), and just dumb. I actually thought it was a tongue in cheek play with the entire female team screwing everything up and given the callsign Banshee in the start, but nope it was serious. Ellen and Amanda (Isolation and comics) Ripley were likeable/relatable and competent first and women second. The cast of this is fictional world/realism breaking choices for the sake of real world feel good platitudes and hiring outside "help". Their hired consultation speaks to this, or rather their AI style cliche-tastic writing does. As stated I have never returned a game before this. I was hesitant even with this. I can excuse bad writing with good game execution or at least novel ideas. Wonky gameplay for good writing. Glitches, bugs, and cliches for an engaging story or just having fun. I didn't see anything that offset the negatives in this package. If you play it and enjoy it, I am glad. For me coming from the first one and having this be the only game I was really excited for in a long while after seeing the trailer as a random ad was a major letdown.
TL;DR: It's fun, and has enough content at launch to warrant the price (unless you are a victim of lack of regional pricing). As of right now (no patches yet) the game has performance issues when transitioning between zones in a mission- probably because it doesn't load the assets until you get to the checkpoints. The cinematics are CRINGE and the voice acting is corny (it grew on me). The movement is floaty as if you were playing a first person game in a 3rd person perspective. However, it is REALLY fun. Ridiculously so. What the game does bad is glaring, but what it does right is just as obvious if you play past the first mission. The enemy variety is impressive, especially for launch. Three different factions (technically four, but robots and synths work together) that each have their own specialized units. Their AI is fun to engage with and you'll be shooting at the walls, floors, and ceilings. The weapon customization is above solid. You have a large variety of weapons, some class-restricted (at first) and some not. Each weapon has 3 attachment slots with a ton of options. When you max out a weapon you can augment it, which drastically changes how the weapon works and there are dozens of really powerful choices for that too. A really fun mechanic that makes missions repayable are the Combat Cards. They are similar to boosters in Helldivers 2 in the sense that each player can select one to bring. However, rather than small helpful bonuses (some can be that), they are instead game-changing modifiers that make the game harder, easier, or both. For example, rank 4 High Threat Environment increases how much damage players AND enemies deal by 100% for a 1.5 reward multiplier. Some add restrictions, give massive buffs/de-buffs, or even give you extra items on mission completion. But the most impressive thing is the build crafting. Holy... It is extensive to say the least. I am a little more than halfway through unlocking all the medic's perks (just finished the campaign) and the amount of builds I have tried and succeeded with is astounding. It's hard to tell just what a class is capable of doing, because each class can build to do SO many things effectively. The game has its faults, (performance will likely be addressed- movement, cinematics, and voice acting not so much), but the progression and teamplay really carry this game. It's been awhile since a game has launched and I genuinely felt like it has enough content to sink 100+ hours in without running out of things to do. And the flamethrower you get towards the end of the game... FINALLY, someone has done a flamethrower right. The movement might be floaty, but I swear I can feel the weight behind that thing when I am purging xenos.
What a solid continuation. Aliens have significantly more variety, Story is better than I was expecting (I dont even remember the 'story' of the first game) Gunplay feels solid, Build and Weapon customization options arent just 3-5% more X, its stacking buffs and timing benefits and skill specialization. There are 15 missions (1 being prologue but its a full length mission - they should release this as a demo imo!) each takes 20-30min on the "standard" difficulty, Ive not done the final one yet but even on Standard there were some harrowing moments first go through! Completely viable and enjoyable solo experience, about 80% of my missions have been solo'd once and then Ive done them also Coop w/ a friend. We have done random full groups and had zero issues. Challenge cards add some variety to stuff, they dont get consumed (I think they used to?) so you can get goofy and make special setups to maximize them as part of the build, it doesnt pick one from the pool submitted anymore, a full group will run 4 challenge cards!
What the actual ♥♥♥♥. How can you make the Aliens franchise boring? It's a cookie cutter, badly implemented, characterless and grating experience. I can only imagine the management saw a cash cow and milked it. Unfortunately, they've left a shell of a game behind.
