Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is one of those games that looks pretty simple at first but has a lot more going on once I actually get into it. It is a top down sci fi shooter where I control a marine and fight through areas packed with alien creatures. The main campaign is built around completing objectives, surviving large groups of enemies and getting my squad through each mission alive. What I like straight away is that it does not try to overcomplicate the basic idea. I pick my class, choose my equipment and get dropped into a dangerous area where I have to work out how to survive. The squad system is a big part of what makes it work for me. There are different marine classes with different roles and equipment, so I have to think about what I bring into a mission instead of treating every character exactly the same. Weapons and equipment also give me useful choices during missions, especially when I have to deal with large groups of aliens or protect an area for a certain amount of time. The hacking sections are another nice change of pace because I am not just shooting constantly from beginning to end. I like that the game expects me to pay attention to what is happening around me rather than simply pointing at enemies and holding the trigger. The actual combat can get really hectic. The aliens can come from different directions and suddenly turn a quiet corridor into a complete mess, so positioning matters a lot. I have to watch where I am standing, manage ammunition and be careful with explosives because friendly fire can become a real problem. I especially like the moments when I am trying to hold a position while enemies keep coming from different entrances. It gives the game that old school cooperative shooter feeling where knowing the map and controlling the situation can be just as important as having good aim. There is also a lot more content here than I expected from a free game. Reactive Drop adds new cooperative campaigns, extra aliens, weapons, challenges and several multiplayer modes. Steam Workshop support is probably the biggest addition for me because it means I can get into community made maps and challenges rather than being limited to the official missions. There is also an included level editor, improved bots for single player and a large achievement list. That gives me plenty of reasons to keep playing after I have worked through the main content. The biggest weakness for me is that the game can feel quite dated in some areas. The visuals are functional rather than impressive, and some of the menus and presentation have that older PC game feeling that takes a little getting used to. I also think the top down viewpoint can make some situations harder to read when there are lots of aliens, effects and marines all moving around at once. The game is not really trying to be a cinematic sci fi adventure either, so the story and characters are nowhere near as important as the gameplay. For me that is acceptable, but it does mean the shooting and mission design have to carry almost the entire experience. I also find that the experience is much better when I am treating it as a tactical game rather than a normal run and gun shooter. Running ahead without thinking can get me into trouble very quickly, especially when enemies surround me or I waste important equipment too early. The difficulty can be pretty demanding at times, but I actually think that works in the game's favour because surviving a difficult section feels earned. At the same time, some missions can become stressful when I have to repeat sections after making one bad mistake. The improved single player bots help when I am playing alone, but the squad focused design still makes the game feel built around coordinated play. Overall, Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is a very solid free shooter that I think deserves more credit for how much it actually gives me. I like the class system, hectic alien combat, mission objectives, hacking, different weapons and the amount of extra content available through challenges and the Workshop. The older presentation and occasional difficulty spikes stop it from reaching the very highest ratings for me, but the core gameplay is still enjoyable and the free price makes the package even easier to appreciate. I can jump into a mission for a quick session or spend much longer working through different campaigns and custom content, which gives it a lot of flexibility. For me, this is one of those free games that feels like a proper complete experience rather than something that is only worth trying because it costs nothing. Rating: 7.9/10
