The combat in this game is amazing. It's what things like Wartales could've done better. The customization of the factions and your ruler is great. The monsterdesigns and details are made with great care. It's the perfected Heroes of Might and Magic.
It's Just a Mobile Game
The developers have tried to add interesting concepts to draw you in, but underneath it all feels cheap and empty. I gave it about an hour, but I only developed a headache. It felt like I'd paid for a freemium mobile game you could download from an app store, just without the ads. After an hour of gameplay, I decided to refund the game.
This is a mediocre game. It was "OK". After fully exploring it, I'm left feeling that if I never played it, I wouldn't be missing anything. Too much DLC, and even on sale isn't worth the price. The whole game loop is about 10 minutes, over and over again.
People are hating on the DLC spam, and sure, this game is pretty damn pricey, but what if you get your money´s worth? I haven´t been this obssessed with a strategy game in a while. 230 hours in, I´ve been trying to create my favorite faction, but I still keep changing it. Still getting new ideas. The customisation is that crazy. This is like Path of Exile of strategies. I eventually bought all the DLCs over a couple weeks of playing because I always got an idea that included a something from each of them. Bad reviews for the vampire dlc? My favorite ruler. Bad reviews for the nomad dlc? My favorite society. Those two are certain. I just keep changing the tome build. The combinations are endless. I can´t even sleep properly damnit! My brain is on an endless theorycraft mode!
Okay... so... I've never played an Age of Wonders game before, I wanted something like Civ VI but make it fantasy. I'll be honest, at first I bought the game, played like 30 minutes and refunded it because it was REALLY overwhelming... but after getting it on sale and taking the time to sit down and play/learn for a few hours, I found myself really having a ton of fun! It's one of the more "intense" strategy games I've ever played but one of those that is easy to play, difficult to master... ANYWAYS, take your time, the game is worth it and I've been having a ridiculous amount of fun.
"i could play AoW4 again, was nice on launch!" "Sure, we added 10 DLCs to buy in for the cheap price of 100 bucks" instantly no interest in coming back
Awesome game. It marries a hint of might and magic with civ in a way that just works. It is ridiculously convoluted, and whilst that may be a reason for some to leave it well alone, for me this is where the real fun is at. The biggest plus, imho, is the option to design your own faction. Simply put, I am having fun. (On a sidenote, you can ignore the DLC. The base game is lovely as is and the DLC simply offers more of the same. It is there if you like it, but you can do without.)
