Well crafted game play. Atmosphere is top notch. Very unique in a lot of ways.
Man what a game. Really fun combination of roquelite mechanics, city management and strategy. The game progresses by winning a series of settlements. Unlike many city builders where you focus on just one city, in Against the Storm you progress through settlements in 1-2 hours. In each settlement you needs to make decisions such as which buildings to unlock and which villagers to take, all based upon what resources you have available from the map. This makes each settlement unique with a variety of unique challenges. The game also has a fun progression system, where it naturally increments the difficulty (and rewards) with more mechanics as you progress, enticing you to pick harder difficulties. In terms expansion packs, if you are questioning whether you need these, i would say no. Each DLC adds another race, more map biomes and just generally more mechanics/diversity. However when you are first playing the game everything is new anyway, so I would suggest getting the DLC after playing the vanilla game for abit anyway. Overall really great game, would definetly recommend.
Imagine a grid based, old fashioned rts, with infinite missions but no military branch/combat to speak of. its all about the economy as you balance the food and comfort needs of your villagers and production concerns as you attempt to complete a certain numbers missions you select from an array mid game. Simple and satisfying gameplay draw you into its depth as you must lean on synergies with your distinct townsfolk to truly excel and meta-progression between runs invites you attempt harder difficulties. Different Biomes combined with different villager needs can make or break a run early on as you struggle to decide which blueprints to choose and how to reliable create tools, while later runs rely on advanced mechanics used at the cost of incurring the blight, and more frequent storms to keep the player engaged and ready to minmax more efficiency out of their villages. and amazing time sink game, I still haven't truly completed it and I plan to play more in the future. 8.5/10
It is a fun, chill game that feels like it it grows.
