I tried this one awhile ago and didnt understand how it worked so I gave up on it, but after picking it up again recently it finally clicked. The idea of a city builder where you constantly have to reset just didnt make sense to me, but its done really well in ATS. Having to unlock base blueprints by leveling up adds a layer of meta progression to an otherwise totally roguelite experience. Some runs you get absolutely screwed with resource nodes and events, others you breeze through. the RNG adds a very addictive element to it, and I can see why so many reviewers have upwards of 500+ hours invested in this game
The depth of this rougelike city-builder manufacturing sim rts strategy game is hella good. I'm obsessed.
This is one of my all-time favourite games. I can't say that I'm usually all that into Roguelite games, but I love city/colony builders and frequently lament that they are for the most part sandbox. I like to have a greater goal. While this game doesn't have too much of a story, and I don't think it needs it either, it has a coherency that I really enjoy. You have to collect seal fragments by settling on the map during a cycle, and then before the cycle ends, permanently seal different levels of seals. This will expand the duration of the cycle and the range that you're able to move from the Citadel. Once the cycle ends, you start over from the Citadel, expanding outwards once more. There's no real way to lose the entire game, even though it's very possible to lose the individual settlements. As you play you also gain resources to get upgrades inside The Smoldering City, getting more buildings, races to play and other perks as you go along. As things get easier from all those unlocks, you can simply increase the challenge level - and gain more rewards in the process. It is, however, not for those that like to slowly build up a settlement and sit back and watch it thrive. Each settlement in this game is temporary, and while there is no timer per se, each year gets harder when the storm comes, and the Queen is not known for her patience. It is a balancing act of keeping your settlers happy while fulfilling the crown's requests. If the Impatience bar fills first, you lose, but if the Reputation bar fills first, you win. That being said, I personally have a tendency to start slow, but that just means that I usually run the settlement for a few years læonger. The fastest I think I've finished a settlement was in year 5, and that was because I rushed against a condition I thought was harder. I am by no means any great wiz at this game. I am nowhere near Prestige Level 20 as many people I see online are, and I have never dared to play on a higher challenge level than Viceroy. But you know what? I'm having fun down here. And I love that the game allows for people of any skill/patience/stress levels to play. The game looks good, it feels good to play (UI-wise) and it's fun. What else can one ask for? It's a yes from me.
I did not believe that a roguelike city builder could work before playing this game, but it does. Even more surprising was how much I enjoyed it, when I prefer calm city builders without time pressure or disaster. This game is a constant disaster and time pressure. Sometimes when things don't work out, it's a frantic scramble for a solution. Like that time I completely ran out of food, and was forced to keep opening glades just to survive. All the while knowing that every single glade will raise the hostility and worsen my already bad situation.
Awesome city builder!
good game!!!
Great concept! This is the sort of game you an keep coming back to over and over,
Great challenge. At first to get to know all the basic mechanics. It gets increasingly difficult, to the point that I finished a few settlements juust in time. Can't wait for all the things the game has to offer yet. I love that you can build a settlement for an hour or so and start another one later. Would recommend 10/10 if you love a challenge, like building settlements and the time restriction you get. Had to get used to the art style at first, but really like it now.
