Adventure Time: Finn and Jake's Epic Quest

Finn and Jake's Epic Quest does a fairly good job in the aesthetics department but falls short in terms of gameplay. Although I would not recommend it for players that are not already fans of the series, it is well worth the price tag for those into Adventure Time. [b] Gameplay [/b] Most of the game involves hack and slashing through enemies in typical action-RPG fashion. Although the base design of it isn't bad at all, it could have been vastly elevated with minor changes or little effort. The main issue is that controls feel clunky, as movement works in 8 directions instead of being a 360° system. This could perhaps be a mouse & keyboard issue, but that along with no camera control makes the whole combat system feel rigid rather than smooth. Combos are fun but very limited in variety. The Enchiridion spell system is a nice touch, but I feel it would have been preferable to have a skill-learning system with 4 active skills as the existing method invites hoarding of scrolls. Finally, there exists little to no challenge in the game, which is understandable considering part of the audience might be young kids, but it's still a shame there is no way to gratify anyone that might want a little more of a struggle. [b] Aesthetics & Story [/b] What Finn and Jake's Epic Quest does right, in my opinion, is nailing a good part of the feel of the world and characters even if you're still playing in a platform-style version of Ooo. Due to the nature of the game a lot of assets end up being repetitive, but are well-designed. The sound and music too, are quite catchy, even though you would expect more voice acting apart from Finn and Jake themselves. Unfortunately, the story itself is even less than bare-bones, but that, I can personally forgive in a hack & slash RPG. [b] Summary [/b] In conclusion, although I felt the game was lacking in many respects, I will admit I enjoyed playing through it quite a bit. It's a shame that it does not reach its true potential, but remains a fun ride for AT fans.
