Action Legion

[b]TL:DR: A solid top-down shooter; fun but not without flaws.[/b] IMO, this is one of those games that make me wish Steam had a neutral recommendation between thumbs-up and thumbs-down. I generally enjoy top-down shooters and Action Legion is no exception but there are some things about it that could use some work. There are a lot of positive aspects to this game, making it a pretty solid entry in the top-down shooter genre. I'm not going to go into detail here as others have already covered this more thoroughly than I would. However, I would like to cover the elements of the game that I believe could be improved. To me, the biggest flaw in Action Legion is the control scheme. At first, I tried the recommended mouse-only controls, which I found to be an interesting and unique approach, but felt that it was making the game unnecessarily difficult. I then switched to the mouse-and-keyboard control scheme, which was definitely an improvement. However, movement and aiming felt really sloppy and the camera seemed to wobble around in a disorienting manner. Also, I discovered that the game would default back to the mouse-only setting whenever I quit so it has to be changed again whenever I start the game To be fair, I did not try using a gamepad - that may be a better option but I can't say. While I think the damage model is really cool - one-shot kills, etc. - I felt that it was hard to keep my legionnaires alive. Additionally, it's not clear whether it even matters keeping your soldiers alive gaining ranks vs. a new dispatch. It would be nice to be able to see what happens when a legionnaire earns a promotion. And finally, the system of gathering intel seems like an afterthought that was hastily tacked on the game. I think that it should either be fleshed out more (e.g. consist of more types of items to collect from crates that you shoot) or just be eliminated Altogether. As is stands, it's pretty worthless. I want to stress that I think Action Legion is a solid top-down shooter. I'm enjoying it a lot, despite the aforementioned negatives. The game is definitely worth buying, even at the full price. It's a great addition to your Steam library, especially if you're a fan of the genre.
