The game can be fun, but the development company is ass. Do I recommend this game ehh get it on super discount.
This is a hard review for me to write. I've put a good amount of time into this janky, fun game over the past decade. In the time this game has taken to make moderate changes, I've become a different person, moved to another city, and moved in with my long-term partners, and now we all play this game together. And I still don't think I can recommend it with my chest. So I guess... let's start with the good. I adore crafting in this game. The crafting is, basically, "Hit button to craft," but there are so many different crafting "tables" in the game that a good session has me bouncing from station to station over several minutes, waiting for my various tables to craft all the things I need. It's unironically a ton of fun (even if the UI is hot garbage). Most of my time spent in this game has been mining and crafting, which is exactly how I want it. Other good things: The game is fairly generous, and you can get pretty granular with the server settings, down to adjusting how plentiful items are and how plentiful (or scarce) certain essential resources are. I enjoy the updates made to the visuals, although overall there is a strong visual design language that could be boiled down to "mud." And the rhythm of the 7 day structure is very fun, especially for a zombie game. Getting attacked by a huge horde every night would get old in this kind of game really quickly. But getting attacked every 7 days (and you get to control how long the days are, in the aforementioned settings) is just about the sweet spot. You get to do whatever for 7 days, then batten down the hatches for the huge horde. It's great. And the bad. The game is only *technically* in full release. It released its 1.0 update so that it could release on certain other platforms that don't allow Early Access. And if that was all, I wouldn't care! But the game is NOT at a 1.0 level of polish. Every single time you play, you will encounter a new bug. One of my partners clicked on a destroyed truck, and a chunk of the ground despawned under him. We put water in a sink, and when we walked outside, the water had poured through a wall and was just aimlessly, endlessly spilling down a hill. My other partner broke a fence, on the ground, that wasn't attached to any part of a house, and a piece of the house broke off (technically, this isn't a bug, it's just kinda stupid). And this is not touching on the thiiiiick amount of jank the game has. Don't get me wrong: I love jank. I play Early Access games all the time, and I have to live with the consequences of my actions. And 7 Days has polished away a surprising amount of that jank. But the problem is that the game is practically *built* on jank, and so any aspect they polish really just shows how janky the rest of the game is. Signs don't rotate when you're placing them when you press the rotate button... you have to press the OTHER rotate button, which is not on the mouse. Zombies can see the "heat" you generate from literally any distance, and with default settings that includes being able to dig down several stories to get to where you're like, cooking food or forging iron. Zombies have inconsistent rules regarding their pathing, and with how they interact with basic physics. I could go on for hours. The game is simultaneously one of the best examples of the zombie survival-crafting genre AND one of the cautionary tales of gaming. It's great, and I kinda hate it, and I'll probably play it again tomorrow.
I have played the game since Alpha 16. To be brutally honest, the game was better, more fun, and more enjoyable then what it is currently at. Previously once you started the game it only gave you 1 mission:"Survive", but now, it`s pretty much handholding you with everything you do and it says "This is how we want you to survive". Dev`s keep removing useful ingame mechanics, only to readd them few updates later in a worse shape, they keep postponing requested updates/mechanics and blaming the community for it, and to top it all off, DLC`s on an early alpha that has been in development for over 13 years? Are you serious!? How about FIRST you FINISH the game, then you add content (even though it`s just crappy skins that have no business being in a post apocalyptic zombie infected survival sandbox) What are we doing nowadays!? The fact that they partnered with Behavior which has DbD (that is another ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game that pigeon holes people with dlc skins and actually is more or less pay to win since perks are locked to killers survivors which you mostly have to buy ). Just give this game a hard pass or if you already have it go back to playing the older versions of the game (Personally still on 1.4) The moding community for the game gives out alot more content than the Funpimps ever will at this rate.
Game could be great but developers keep attacking the player base, content creators, and lost their original vision. Play something else as this ship sailed a long time ago.
After being acquired by Behavior Interactive (Dead By Daylight devs), AI Generated art is used on some thumbnails, and is not disclosed anywhere on their Steam page. Letting AI do it's thing, even by tiny amounts on a creative medium like a game will never look good and only serves to drag The Fun Pimps™' name through even deeper mud, since they've always been known for being a lazy and dishonest studio.
TFP keeps ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the bed with this game. I want to keep liking it, but the best they can do is create a platform for modders to make the game they wont. They are too busy trying to force you to play their way rather than adding more to the game. We wont talk about their unwillingness to own up to their mistakes and lashing out at their content creators.
Garbage community, not worth wasting your time in, literally any other survivor game is better lol
A company that would take away a loyal influencer's creator credentials for their own screwup needs a serious check on where their priorities are. They surely aren't with the players. Jawoodle needs a serious apology! Also this game has been leaning towards mythical fantasy instead of zombie survival. Remove the bee spitters and other stupid zombies! Trader quest rewards and their personalities are garbage (except Jen who's sadly locked to the worst biome), biome progression is trash, learn by reading should only be for skills that require learned knowledge. Everything else should be learn by doing. Used to watch more of this game then play it myself, but even that has ended recent do to Fun Pimps horrendous treatment of Jawoodle!
I quite enjoy 7 Days to Die, I believe it is a fantastic survival game and is a perfect blend of complex enough to be interesting but not too complex to be annoying. That being said, due to the use of AI, even for something as minor as Difficulty Icons, I cannot recommend this game as long as it is in use.
someone hit me up when this game is good again.
